Saturday Kindergarten Post!

Happy Saturday!  I hope all of my friends with snow and ice are safe and warm.  We actually got out of school 2 hours early yesterday due to the threat of ice.  And we got…nothing!  But hey, I’ll take a short day!  Of course a short day means things don’t get finished…but hey, an afternoon nap on a Friday?!  Perfect.  Of course the nap resulted from a shot that made me feel cruddy…but don’t wanna get the mumps or measles, ya know?!

How about a little peek at what we did this week in our room?!

This was TH week so we kicked off the week with some TH words on our circle map!
And of course, we had to make a silly hat for TH.  We  made thunderstorm hats!
This week we introduced subtraction.  The first couple days was a bit of a struggle.  Subtraction is one of those skills that students seem to struggle with.  But after some practice and fun lessons, we finally started to get it!  Mr. Greg was very proud!

I moved this monkey lesson into our math centers to give the ‘staches independent subtraction practice and they loved it!
We also kicked off our holiday celebrations with a couple of fun stories and craftivities!

We read Aliens Love Panta Clause and laughed and laughed at all of the underwear antics of these aliens!  We made an alien in underpants Santa craftivity to go along with our story!

We also read Moosletoe and learned new vocabulary and completed a story map!  We then made our own moosletoe!  Complete with a glittery mustache!
Our “Sparkling Words” are new vocabulary words from the story.  We try to determine the meaning of the words based on what the book says (context clues in Kindergarten people!!) and through some guided thinking from Mr. Greg.  We did really well figuring these out.  We write the word, the meaning and a little sketch on a Post-It note!  We try to use these in our classroom throughout the week to help us retain the words!  And really, who doesn’t love glitter?!

Our Moosletoe story map!!
This week we also did our special version of The Twelve Days Of Christmas with a fun writing activity:  The Days Of December!
We had some great ideas for gifts!  Ninja turtles…a real turtle…Barbies…and more!
A light up mermaid.  Notice the illustration.  So.  Much.  Detail.

A bike!  Love the girl riding the bike!
A mustache for Christmas…who doesn’t want that?!?!

I love the illustration on this picture!!!!
And now I have to give you a sneek peek into our week next week…check out this great Gingerbread man hunt!  This is how I’m kicking off our gingerbread man adventure on Monday!
This is from my sweet friends at Teaching With Style!!   I love how fun this is and how it can be adapted to fit our needs!  And it’s ink friendly!!!!!
This is a perfect way to introduce a unit with the gingerbread man!  Once we return to our room and find the little man,we are going to make a gingerbread man hat!!
Thanks for sharing this awesome resource, Nicole!!!
