Sight Word Stones

This is my last Monday Made It before we head back to school!!!   People, it’s over.  Summer is ending and I am so excited for a new school year …in a new school…in a new classroom…with new ‘staches!!!!
So I am always on the lookout for things to use in my classroom to keep my ‘staches engaged and learning.  And who doesn’t love playing with rocks?!?!  (Ummm how long before someone eats one or throws one at a friend?!?!?  You know it’s going to happen!)
See, the standards and mandates are here to stay…so we might as well make them fun!  #commoncoreisfun
I am loving these stones/gems/decorative fillers that you can find at any hobby/craft store.  My store of choice is Michael’s!   Mr. Greg endorses Michael’s!  Hello $2 cardstock and 15% discount!!!!!
These were about $6 and there are hundreds of them in the bag!
You’ll need these stones and some Sharpie paint markers!
You’ll need sight word cards.   I did all of the words that we will be using during the first 9 weeks of school!  (You can check out my sight word cards at the end of the post!)
First,  write one letter on each stone to spell out a sight word.  I printed my sight word cards and color coded the letters to the word to make it a little more organized!
Then you spray the stones with some clear enamel spray paint just to keep the letters from rubbing off!  I’m sure you can modge podge them too!
And you’re done!

Students can then choose a sight word card, read the word, build the word and write the word!

The great thing about these stones is that they can be used for so many different skills!   Sight words, letters, cvc words, cvc-e words, names, you could even use them for making addition and subtraction equations!!
See…$6 and you get tons of uses.  That’s a bargain, people!!!!   #techersbethrifty
To add more rigor (hello, education word of the minute!) you can have them write the word.  You cna even require them to use smelly markers and use the same color as the word and the letters!  BAM!
Check out these sight word card creations!
