Schedulin Sunday: Decomposing Numbers, Fairy Tales, Women’s History Month

This week we are working on decomposing numbers and writing equations, wrapping up our fairy tales and farm unit, celebrating Black History Month and Women’s History Month, and going on a field trip to the children’s theatre!

Note: This year, my goal is to show you that you can use our TKS resources along with required curriculums and continue to have fun, so you’ll see that happening throughout the school year!

District Guidelines

  • We are required to wear masks indoors but not at recess (our mandate ends March 11).
  • We can have shared supplies and centers while maintaining 3 feet of distance when possible.
  • We are keeping our enhanced cleaning procedures (wipe down surfaces throughout the day, steam sanitize the room daily, hand sanitizer/hand washing throughout the day, steam mop the floors daily, etc)
  • I have added an air purifier to our classroom after reading the research from Johns Hopkins that these can help reduce the spread of Covid and other germs. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PURIFIER I ORDERED!

Lesson Plans

Blends BOOTCAMP

In keeping with the pacing of our foundational skills curriculum, we’re continuing Blends Bootcamp this week. Our mandated foundational skills curriculum adds blends to the decoding work we do, so we’re going to use Blends Bootcamp to support that work. This week our focus is on blending words and writing words. We will lean heavily on our TKS decodable readers!

And yes, Blends Bootcamp and the entire TKS BOOTCAMP curriculum are aligned to the science of reading. And it has been from day 1 because that’s how I was taught to teach reading so it’s what I’ve always done!

Sight Word 60!

This week we are continuing Sight Word 60! After spending the summer learning more about the science of reading, we are continuing with Sight Word 60. We have always had decoding and encoding (writing) of the words as part of Sight Word 60 so we will continue that and will increase the amount of decoding and writing. We will also use orthographic mapping and we’re changing our order of sight words to align to the 109 most frequent words (even though we do 100 words…). You can learn all the details of how Sight Word 60 works on the linked blog post and you can get everything you need for Sight Word 60 in our Sight Word 60 creation!

Read It Up: Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Hen And Three Little Pigs

We are wrapping up unit 2 of our required curriculum. This week we are using the text Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Hen, and Three Little Pigs. This week we’re comparing and contrasting the stories, discussing what made each story a good story and writing our own stories.

African American Heroes Research Project

This week we are wrapping up our celebration of Black History Month by learning about African American heroes! I do want to say this: we also use this research project throughout the year. One thing we have tried to do in our classroom is making our themes/units more inclusive so we pull our Heroes Research Projects into all parts of our school year. So Black History Month is coming to an end but we will continue to learn about African American Heroes throughout the school year.

Each day we will read about a different hero, complete a graphic organizer and write about the person. We also do a directed drawing of each hero! This week we are learning about President Obama.

All of our directed drawings are from The Creative Camper on TPT!!

Women’s History Month-Women Heroes

This week we are kicking off our celebration of Women’s History Month!American heroes! I do want to say this: we also use this research project throughout the year. One thing we have tried to do in our classroom is making our themes/units more inclusive so we pull our Heroes Research Projects into all parts of our school year.

This week we’re learning about Jane Goodall, Katherine Johnson, and Kamala Harris! For each hero, we read a book and complete our graphic organizer. We watch a video and write in our research journal. And we do a directed drawing for each person!

All of our directed drawings are from The Creative Camper on TPT!!

Math-Decomposing Numbers To 10

NOTE: This resource has been updated with additional recording sheets for writing equations!

This week we’re working on decomposing numbers and writing addition equations. We will be using number bonds to decompose numbers and write equations! The idea is to show various ways to make numbers!

Monday-giant number bond on the floor! We make our giant number bond on the floor and use the students to decompose numbers. Then we will write the equations on whiteboards.

decomposing numbers

Here is a digital version of this activity! We did this during pandemic teaching when we had to maintain social distance. I used pictures of the kids on the smartboard to decompose!

Tuesday we will work on decomposing numbers using our large paper number bonds and manipulatives. Students will again write equations on whiteboards.

Thursday and Friday will be small group work using the large number bonds. We will also decompose numbers with dominos!

If you saw last week’s Schedulin Sunday, you saw we were working on a new Math It Up! creation for addition to 10. It’s finally ready and so is the subtraction version! Grab them both by clicking the images!

Mad Science Thursday

This week we are combining science and art! We are doing bubble painting!

This will be Covid safe so each student will have their own cups of paint and their own straws.

Foodie Fun Friday

This week our Foodie Fun Friday snack is rainbow toast!

To paint the bread we use edible paint. Or milk colored with food coloring! The students use paintbrushes to paint their toast and they eat their toast!

Morning Meeting Greeting

This week our morning meeting greeting is a new greeting! We’re playing the match game. Each kid has a card with a number or ten frame. They have to find the partner with the matching card. They greet that person!
