Where Did Sight Word 60 Come From?
And thus was born Sight Word 60 and yes, Sight Word 60 IS aligned to the science of reading.
What Is Sight Word 60?
The premise of Sight Word 60 is that in the course of a school week, 5 days, students get more than 60 exposures to each sight word and that happens in just a few minutes each day. No long lessons. A few high-impact, engaging minutes to teach sight words. Plus students also get practice decoding the words so they’re getting multiple tools and strategies for being good readers.
YES! Decoding sight words is possible and should be used along with automaticity. This is so important because the research tells us that decoding is the most efficient way to build automaticity. Students need to decode a word 1-8 times according to research. Since Sight Word 60 gives you more than that we’re providing the necessary practice so that the words can be orthographically mapped into students’ memory. All this said sight words aren’t bad. Teaching automaticity with sight words isn’t bad. What’s important to remember is to teach multiple strategies and provide all the tools to read and write.
Sight Word 60 works with any sight word list. Dolch. Fry.

Love your video!! I got the Big Word app that you recommended. Did you just take a picture of the word and use the words in your camera roll so that you could flip through them?
Do you always capitalize the first letter? I was just wondering. Thanks for sharing! Becky
We do the same review but I make a video of the words they decorated. We then say the word, spell the word, and say the word. They love it.
Check it out
I just started sight word 60 this week and I am loving it. My students are too! Thanks for always having such amazing ideas!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU… for sharing your Sight Word 60 program. I started implementing it as soon as you shared it in March and I have seen amazing results. Cannot wait to start off next school year with this!

Are there sight word grids for first grade? I would love to use them in my classroom. Thanks! Trisha
They are for Kindergarten but they are editable so you can make your own! 😉
Hello, I am having trouble finding the editable sight word 60 grid. Any tips? Thank you!
It’s in the Resource Center!
Hello! So I started a version of sight word 60 this January so it fits our schedule and curriculum. I have to present my research from this little project and was wondering if you have any suggestions for “data” and outside articles I could use for my principal.
I would love to see how you do week four review of all the words. Do you have a post if it somewhere?
There are links to each of the 5 days of Sight Word 60 included. Refer back to this blog post. 😉
Hi! Do you have the List of the order in which you present your sight words? I LOVE the grids but can tell which is for the first week, second week and so on? I have followed you guys for years and purchased so many of your products!! Thanks for being awesome!!!
You can see them in my Big Picture. You can find the link at the bottom of the Resource Center.
When do you start Sight Word 60?
Usually the 2nd week of school but this year, I’ve decided to wait until we come back to in-person teaching in October before I start.
This is such a great idea!! I really love this idea. These are best Thanksgiving Games For Kids to play with your family this thanksgiving.
I’m wondering where the 60 exposures come from. Read the blog and trying it but I’m only getting maybe 10 exposures per week. Do you do the old words and the 4 new ones each day? Just not sure what I’m missing
Yes, you review all the words for that week every day.
