Let’s be real for a second… You’ve spent weeks (months? years? your entire teaching career?!) teaching:
- short vowels
- long vowels
- vowel teams
And then along comes SCHWA like: “LOL none of that matters sometimes.”
But here’s the thing:
Schwa is the reason so many of our kids get stuck when reading and spelling.
So instead of ignoring it…we’re leaning ALL the way in. And we’re doing it by celebrating National Schwa Day!

What Is The Schwa Sound?
The schwa sound is the lazy vowel sound. It sounds like: /uh/
And here’s the wild part: ANY vowel can make the schwa sound.
Examples:
- about → uhbout
- pencil → pencuhl
- problem → probluhm
So yeah…rules? Kinda. Predictable? Not always. Important? ABSOLUTELY.
Why Teaching Schwa Matters (Like…A LOT)
If we don’t teach schwa, kids will:
- over-pronounce vowels when reading
- struggle with multi-syllable words
- spell words exactly how they sound (and honestly…fair)
But when we DO teach it:
- decoding improves
- fluency smooths out
- spelling starts making more sense
It’s one of those “THIS is what’s been tripping them up” moments.
National Schwa Day In The Classroom: Read Aloud And Explicit Phonics
First, we introduce the not-so-lazy schwa sound by reading this book:

As we read, we discuss the schwa sound, and I exaggerate the sound when I’m reading. I ask the kids to listen for the lazy schwa, and if they hear him, they make the “uh” sound.
After reading, we make a circle chart of words with the schwa sound. (Pro tip: I have a list of words ready, and you’ll definitely need to give hints to get a comprehensive list!).

And yes, the homemade costume definitely helps make the explicit phonics instruction better. Or at least more fun!

National Schwa Day Celebration Ideas
It’s an official national day (there’s a proclamation and everything!), so of course we’re gonna celebrate!
We start with our morning meeting, and we share ways to relax. And let’s face it…We all need to relax more.

And of course, we make a hat. Because even if you can’t officially celebrate, you can make a hat and discuss the schwa sound.

National Schwa Day Art Project
What better way to celerbate schwa day then with a fun lemonade art project!
The ice cubes are made from… reusable ice cubes dipped in white paint!

You can even enjoy some lemonade with your class or your coworkers! We set up a lemonade stand for our staff in the workroom!
