Decomposing Numbers: The number 5

Today was observation day for the kindergarten smorgasbaord!!  I decided not to sweat it.  I did my thang and it’s done.  I’m a great teacher (at least I think I am!)   My monsters learn a tremendous amount every day (says my data!) so that’s all the observation and evaluation I need!  I did score myself all 4 and 5 on my self reflection!   I will share the results when I know them!

This week we have been learning how to decompose numbers (KOA3 in the Common Core vernacular!).  This was the lesson yesterday and today!  I want to give a HUGE shout out to my friend Maria at KinderCraze for her inspiration and amazing resource!  Go say hi!

Yesterday we worked whole group on decomposing the number 5.  The monsters were astonished that you could make the same number in different ways!  I gave them a bag of 10 legos.  We started off with a tower of 5 blue Legos.  We talked about how 5 blue Legos and 0 Legos made 5.  Then we wrote our number sentence on our white board paddle.

We removed 2 blue Legos so we had 3 blue Legos and added 2 red Legos.  We came up with the number sentence 3+2=5.  We wrote our number sentence.

We are loving learning with our Legos!

So many ways to to make 5.

Today we worked in small groups using this resource from KinderCraze.  Before we did the paper practice, we practiced with our Legos again in small groups.  Then we worked with paper squares.  The monsters did a stellar job.  For just 2 days of practice with such a difficult skill I was very pleased!!  (I did score myself 4 and 5 on my self evaluation…cuz um, we rock!!)
How do you teach decomposing numbers?
I have’t shared an outfit in a while so I want to show you my Mr. Rogers look from today!
Come on people, how cute?!?!
Pants:  Gap
Shirt:  Target
Sweater:  Target ($9 clearance!)
I finished this new common core creation last night!  Just in time for March Madness and basketball frenzy!  (I was printing this today in my classroom and my monsters were so excited…I can’t wait to laminate all of this tonight and share it with the monsters!)
How about a giveaway ?!  Leave a comment and I will pick one random winner later tonight before I go to bed and I will send them my little creation!
Here is another creation that my monsters love using to decompose numbers!  This is great for math centers and math tubs!
