Saturday Kindergarten Post May 4th, 2013

Happy Saturday and Happy Derby Day!  It’s another nasty dreary rainy weekend here in Music City!  I really just want a nice sunny Saturday so I can plant some flowers!

Another week has come and gone in the Kindergarten Smorgasboard.  And what a week it was.  There was a wedding, 3 days of standardized testing and Cinco de Mayo!

First things first…SAT10 testing took up most of our week.  It was painful for all involved but the monsters did an amazing job!  They really did handle the situation with some amazing self control and hard work.  I am so very proud of them!  They quote of the week came from my friend, “Oprah” when she stood up after the last test and announced:  “We rocked Mr. Greg’s world with that test!”  And so they did!

Sadly the required test “security” measures used up all of the bulletin board paper in our school so we couldn’t do that large art project that I had planned (thanks a lot SAT 10!) but we still had a great week!

And we ended our week with some sad news for the monsters.  As I have started packing my stuff (I think a u-Haul truck will be needed to move my stuff!) there are boxes in the classroom.  My friend, “Oprah” who is a little too observant has figured out the situation.  She keeps saying, “You’re not coming back are you?”  I decided I needed to tell the monsters that I was not returning to our school next week because I wanted them to hear it from me and no one else.  After I shared the news there were lots (and lots) of tears!  And lots of questions.  I explained to them that we still had 15 days together and that they were going to first grade and I was going to a new school.  I made sure we understood that I was going to be there through the end of the year and that I would be back to visit them as first graders!  So we agreed to celebrate our last 3 weeks with glitter, mustaches and lots of fun!  I am going to miss those monsters!

We kicked off our week with the wedding of Q and U!  We dressed up, we had cake, we had a moving and touching ceremony!  And now and forever the monsters will remember that Q and U are always together!!

We also continued our very exciting alphabet countdown this week!

P for picnic!  This was a perfect way to spend the afternoon after our first day of testing!  It was such a blast!  The cafeterria provided our sack lunches.  We all brought snacks from home and had towels and blankets to sit on!  We even took our shoes off and soaked up the sun!  AHHH spring!
Finally, Friday arrived and were free from testing so we CELEBRATED in a big way!  We celebrated Cinco de Mayo and Mustaches for M!    We painted sombreros and ponchos for our celebration!  We listened to Mexican music and ate tacos!  And the best part:  MUSTACHES!  Thanks for my awesome teammate, we had mustaches to wear!  Can we say that this was the highlight of the week!
These projects turned out so cute!  And it was MESSY!  We were covered in paint…head to toe…tables…but you know what my motto is:  MESSY=SUCCESSFUL!
As part of our Cinco de Mayo and mustache fun, we read these two books!  I highly recommend them!

How to make a sombrero from poster board and a paper bowl!
Cut the poster board in half.  Draw a circle the size of the poster board.
Place the bowl in the center of the circle and trace the bowl.
Cut out the large circle.  Then cut out the circle in the middle.  TIP  cut this whole slightly smaller than the line you traced!
Staple the bowl over the opening you just cut!
PAINT!
We ended our testing week with Foodie Fun Friday and dined on tacos!  Some of us dined on 3 or 4 tacos!
And don’t worry…we did do some actual Common Core learning!  Friday we measured Cinco de Mayo!
And of course, Mr. Greg got into the fun!

In honor of mustaches, here is my newest creation for back to school!
