A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Schedulin Sunday: November 3rd, 2013

Happy Sunday!  It’s lesson planning time in The Kindergarten Smorgasboard.  This week we are focusing on the letter F and fire safety.  I know it’s late, but better late than never, right?!  Since we had a two week fall break in the middle of October, so we are getting this important week in now!

Monday

Today we have our TRIPOD survey (the 5 year olds answer 35 questions about the quality of their teacher and their education…true story…then the results of the 5 year olds are used as part of my evaluation score) and our two-hour planning, so Monday is going to be a little crazy!

We kick off fire week with Mark Teague’s Firehouse.  After reading the story we will complete a story map and discuss the main idea of the story.
We will make a circle map of F words.  Mr. Greg will draw the pictures of our words.  We will also count the syllables in each word.    We will listen for the /f/ sounds and give a thumbs up when we hear the /f/ sounds.  We will practice our segmenting skills and change our names (stay tuned for a blog post on the name changing fun!)
In math, we will begin decomposing numbers and learning ways to make numbers in different ways.  We will start using our part-part whole mats.  Students will count 5 Legos into the whole box.  They will then move their Legos into the part-part boxes.  We will record the different ways to make 5 on our class chart.
Writing will be writing fire safety rules!
And of course, we can’t have a Monday with no hat!  It’s f and fire week so why not a fire dog hat?!
I found this idea on the Mailbox website!
Tuesday
Today we will read Firefighters To The Rescue.  We will create a flow map to re-tell the story.  We will discuss the main idea of the story.  We will review our f word circle map from Monday.  We will spell the words we brainstormed yesterday.
We will do our word study today individually today!  I will model how to cut the pictures apart.  The students will sort their pictures by beginning sound.
We will create a tree map about firefighters.
In math, we will continue working on different ways to show numbers!  We will spill the beans today!  Each of my ‘staches will have 5 red and yellow counters in a cup.  They will spill the counters and color the circles on their paper to show ways to make 5.

We will review our fire safety rules and make a firetruck craftivity.  I don’t have a picture of the craft, but my rockin’ teammate, Mrs. P came up with it and it’s awesome!!!!  The ladder moves and everything.  Stay tuned for more!
Wednesday
Fire week continues with the story Russ and The Firehouse.  We will make a circle map of all of the things firefighters have and firefighters do!  We will also discuss the main idea of the story.
Students will work on their word study as I monitor their work.
In math, we will continue decomposing numbers and showing numbers in different ways.  Today we will use our counting ropes.
Students will put all 5 beads on one side of the rope.  Then we will move our beads to either side of the rope.  We will write the equation that makes 5.
If you would like to see how I make these counting ropes, click here!  Or click the picture to see the YouTube video!
We will review our fire safety rules and make this adorable firefighter from Julie Lee!
Thursday
We will read Firefighter Ted and discuss firefighters and fire safety.
Students will write “I can be safe in a fire by….” and illustrate their writing.
They will complete their word study by sorting by first sound.
In math, we will continue showing ways to make numbers.  Today we will introduce number bonds.  We will show various ways to make numbers using Legos.  Who doesn’t love Legos?!
We will do this adorable firefighter art project to wrap up our fire week!
Friday
Today we will head out to the pumpkin patch.  We were originally scheduled to go on Halloween but the weather made us reschedule.
After we return from the trip, we will have Mad Scientist Friday and Foodie Fun Friday!
Our Mad Scientist Experiment today is Jumping Colors!
Click here to download your free experiment instructions and labels!
And for Foodie Fun Friday, we will be making a firetruck snack!
Ingredients:  graham crackers, red frosting, vanilla wafers, Twizzlers and a Triscuit!
And that is our week!
I have written a firefighter emergent reader and included a labeling activity and vocabulary cards!  Click the picture to download your freebie!
We will be using these Common Core creations this week as part of our math lessons on showing numbers in different ways:
I also updated this fun creation!  It’s much more printer friendly!!!!!!!  And has new activities (ten frames, syllables and a write the room activity!
