I want to share what we did today because…well…we had a blast! I love this activity because it’s engaging, it’s a necessary skill, it’s assessing and it’s fun! The ‘staches don’t even know they’re learning! And it makes a cute display for our hallway!
How about stringin’ up some sight words?!
Here’s how it works…
I assess the ‘staches on their sight words. I then put a dot on each word they can read. The words with the dots are the words they color.
After they color all of their words, they cut them out.
After they cut out their lights they glue them on their light strings. The strings are just black construction paper cut into 2″ wide strips. I use the 18″ long paper. If they run out of room, they just continue onto another strip. When finished, we staple the strips together to make one big string of sight word lights!
I love that this kept the ‘staches engaged all morning. People, it’s so engaging, that I got almost all of my assessing finished. Like 98% finished! Holla!!!!!
Of course, we talk about how some of us have many words and some have less. We discuss why that might be. We focus on the fact that we are all different and learn words differently and that it’s OK! We also talk about things we can do to learn more words! We had a big conversation about “getting up off the bench” and practicing. It’s a football metaphor that I used one day and it stuck…so not only are we learning but we are having some great discussion about our own learning. What more could you ask from a lesson?!
