Today we are continuing our blog series on Morning Meeting talking about morning meeting greetings.
Why Are Morning Meeting Greetings Important?
One thing we need to always be aware of is that many of our students come to school to feel loved, to feel safe, and to feel like they belong to something. And they need and deserve to know that they matter. So many of our students come from homes and experiences that can be scary, stressful and chaotic. And the hard truth is that many of our kids don’t feel valued. That is why the greeting is so powerful.
The purpose of the morning meeting greeting is to let our students know that we see them, we hear them, and they belong to something important. The morning meeting greetings are fun but what they say to our students is that you are here and you are a part of this family. During our greetings, every person is greeted by at least 1 person. That means that every day at least one person looks at you and says: “Good morning Greg!” The power of that one simple exchange cannot be understated.
What Are The Procedures For Your Morning Meeting Greetings?
In our classroom we do a greeting for the entire week. On Monday we introduce a new greeting and we use that greeting all week. This allows us to get very good each of our greetings and build up our consistency. We typically do a new greeting each week, but we also repeat a few of our favorites!
When we’re greeting one another we’re also working on our communications skills. We learn to make eye contact when we greet one another, we learn how to shake hands and we learn how to use the proper voice levels. Every single greeting we implement has the students using the words “Good morning….” A majority of the greetings involve the students shaking hands. This means we spend an entire year learning to shake hands! Remember, this is not a natural instinct for students. You must model and practice hand shaking! (A LOT!)!
When introducing a new greeting I model the greeting first. Then I ask the class to tell me what we did, what we said, what they noticed. Then I model again and we practice the greeting. Monday takes a bit longer because it’s a new greeting and we’re learning. The rest of the week the greeting will speed up because we become very fluent in our greeting!
Check out this video to see what it sounds like and looks like when we introduce our new greeting on Monday:
What Morning Meeting Greeting Ideas Do You Have?
There are two types of morning meeting greetings that we use. The first is a whole group greeting where everyone is participating in the greeting. This greeting means everyone greets everyone. These are usually simple cheers involving each student’s name. The other is a 1 on 1 greeting. These greetings mean that you will be greeted by just 1 person. These greetings take a little more time.

The morning meeting greetings can also incorporate academics. We use address labels to practice letters, sounds, numbers, shapes, and sight words during our morning meeting greeting! With these greetings students greet each other by the skill written on the label instead of by name! So we might say “Good morning 11!”
Here’s another greeting idea. Write student names and add their pictures to index cards. Students choose a card, find that person and greet them!
Here’s another greeting idea! Create a PowerPoint side with turkeys. Put student pictures behind the turkey. When you advance the slide, the turkey moves and we greet the person we see. This idea is used throughout the year. We use these PowerPoint greetings with rainbows, the moon, carrots, etc.

I notice you have a trampoline in the middle of the carpet. I am very curious about that, but I can’t locate a blog post about it.
Excited for starting more effective morning meetings this coming year!
Just type “trampoline” in the search and it will come up! Can’t miss it!
I I love your morning meetings! I want to start a proper morning meeting instead of just “Calendar Time” this year, but I’m nervous about taking up too much time. Do you think it’s worth it overall? Do you sing the song everyday?
ABSOLUTELY worth it! 100%!! It changes everything because of the sense of community it builds between students and their classmates and with the teacher.
I am amazed at how well your students understand the concept of question vs. statement. How did you get them there?? Please share!
Hi Elissa! Just lots of modeling, scaffolding & support!!
II have done Morning Work first in our class. Seat work is a must and expected because kids come in from 7:45 10 8:00. I want to start Morning Meeting but I am nervous and scared. I have always done Calendar in the morning, for over 13 years. You said it only takes 20 minutes is that for everything. I love your trampoline idea!!
I I love the way you do your Morning Meeting. I want to use your Morning Meeting this year but I still do not know what will happen at my school district. We are offering 3 different educational models for parents to choose from. I am not sure how I will be teaching, online, in class or a hybrid model. I am thinking about how I can use Morning Meeting in each of these models so that I can be ready no matter what option I am given to teach. Do you have any suggestions? Did you have to modify and change it in your class when school closed for Covid? Thank you so much for your time and for sharing your knowledge.
Hi! I will certainly be sharing ideas for how to modify morning meeting. Right now, we are still waiting on our district to tell us expectations so that I can make actual plans. Stay tuned!

Hi Greg! I LOVE that you talked about the power of your one simple exchange. My kinders come in in the morning and make their lunch choice, but their communication folder in the tub, hang their coats/backpacks up, and then sit down to eat breakfast while working on their morning work. At 8:45am every morning, my student hear the Good Morning song from YouTube by Greg and Steve and that is their cue/sign to push in their chairs, turn in their morning work (if it is completed), throw away their breakfast (if they haven’t already) and to meet me on the carpet in their designated seat. Once the song is completed, they know they are to be on their spots criss cross applesauce, ready to learn! Once this happens I then say “good morning!” and they reply with “Good morning, Ms. Krasavage!” and I continue on to walk them through the schedule for the day. This is how we start our morning EVERY day- and the kids and I love the consistency. I love reading your blog posts, thanks for your thoughts!
