Wherever we set the bar for our students, that’s where they will reach. If we set the bar high, they will soar high. If we set the bar low they will suffer. Walk into our classroom and ask my students what’s expected of them, it’s simple: BE THE BEST. Period. In everything we do, everywhere we go, and all that we do. Be. the. best. That’s a high expectation. And that’s what we strive for each day. Do we always make it? Of course not. We’re 5 years old and we’re human. We learn from those days and we start the next day aiming high!

It’s a doorbell. We use a wireless doorbell as our attention signal. When the doorbell rings, students know to stop, be quiet and look at me. No clapping, no call and response, just a doorbell chime and I have their attention.

No snide remarks here! These are the same things I have going on in my room and have been challenged by others (parents and principals) to do away with a clip chart. My focus too is to focus on positives and it's not at the front of my room either. I love your use of the trampoline as an added incentive and have recently acquired a trampoline for my room. Thanks for always inspiring and for doing what you feel is right for the kiddos that you teach.

I also feel that it motivates positive peer interactions and students on task or showing star work ethic! I love your trampoline idea. I have 5 in my motor lab I might need to snag one and take your hints into my room.

I love the clip chart until last year. I had students who when told to “clip down” they would move it to the bottom of the same color they were on, so it wasn't a true reading. I would love to use it again, but after this being an ongoing problem I have been using dojo. How could I correct that problem.

It's a classroom procedure to teach. I actually turned my chart horizontally, we learn to move clips from one paw shaped poster to the next. Black is Amazing, Blue is Great, Green is our baseline, Yellow and then Red for friends who need to improve their choices. It's not a big focus in my room, but I felt it was better for my Kinders than dojo because it gives them a visual cue that dojo doesn't.
I caught a student “fake” moving a clip. I told Kinderoo our class puppet outloud that I noticed a friend who was dishonest. And had a think aloud conversation about being honesty, trust, and feelings. The child confessed quietly later that day. I told him that being dishonest causes me to not trust him and as a consequence he had to move twice once for infraction and once for lying. I made sure to catch him being good right away and he got to move back up to show him he could turn his behavior around fast if he tried.
Always wondered about a trampoline in the rooom. Are there any issues with kids falling off? Do some kids have balance problems? Some have that upright support handle. I’m sure you did some initial lessons on its safe use. Suggestions for management? No problems with admin?
Kids do fall off. No one has ever been hurt. I’m always there with them so it’s safe. The trampoline is positioned so they can’t fall into anything. I did not ask permission or get release forms. The trampoline is just as safe as our playground or gym equipment.

II love the idea of a trampoline because it not only allows students to have a brain break, but also gets their energy out. I’ve looked into trampolines on Amazon and many seem to be made with elastic bands versus springs anymore. Some of the elastic band trampolines don’t have the best reviews for holding up well. I was wondering what type of trampoline you had and if it seems to be holding up well for your students? Thanks so much! Love reading your blog posts.
Mine has held up very well! I’ve had mine for 3 years with no issues other than having to replace the cover.
I think the trampoline is a great idea because it not only gives students a brain break, but also lets them get some energy out. I have looked into purchasing a small trampoline online, but many seem to be made with resistance bands versus the springs that they used to be made with. Some of the reviews on the ones with the resistance bands don’t seem very good. I was wondering how your trampoline was made…if it’s the resistance bands does it bounce very well and how is it holding up? Thanks so much! I love reading your blog posts!

I taught Kinder for 5 years and began following you then before moving to 2nd grade. Do you think 2nd graders are too big for the trampoline reward/celebrations? Wondering if it’s too baby-ish for the “big” 2nd graders 😉 – or if they’ll love it just as much as Kinders.
