Lesson Plans For ABC BOOTCAMP

This week is always a favorite because we kick off ABC BOOTCAMP! I can’t believe this is year 12 of this amazing resource! The fun, the cutting skills, and the growth that we have with ABC BOOTCAMP are what make it a must-do! This week, we’re doing M A T D O. We’re once again following the order of our required district curriculum.

For each letter, we do a circle chart, which is explicit instruction in sounds and letters using a sounds-first approach. We do explicit handwriting instruction. We also make a hat to build phonemic awareness and vocabulary while practicing cutting skills.

For handwriting, I explicitly model how to form each letter, and students practice independently!

We also practice writing the letter during our morning message!

And, of course, we make our ABC BOOTCAMP hats! This week, we’re making a mustache, apple, tractor, disco ball, and otter hats!

Lesson Plans: Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp

This week we also start Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp! Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp is all about hearing the sounds and the oral language. We start with sentences and work our day down to sounds in words, segmenting etc. This research-based resource is designed for each lesson to take about 10 minutes, and then we move to ABC BOOTCAMP, which has explicit phonics and combines sounds and letters. This week in Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp, we’re working with sentences and the idea that sentences have a WHO and DOING WHAT! We will find pictures to match sentences, say sentences and build sentences!

Lesson Plans: Names

This week and for many weeks, we’re working on learning our names. We start with the book Your Name Is A Song. This book is all about the importance of correctly pronouncing each name. Please take the time to learn how to say each child’s name correctly. Ask the family. Practice until you get it right. Ask the family again if you need help.

We work on writing our name each day, we graph how many letters in our names and we do torn paper names!

Our torn paper names activity is great for fine motor skills. I write student names on black construction paper using a white crayon. I model how to to tear the paper and glue it on. Students then work on their names! As they finish, they help their friends!

Lesson Plans: Reading

This week, we’re reading Miss Nelson Is Missing because it’s the perfect read-aloud for building routines and expectations. Plus, it’s a classic and a must-read.

After reading the story, we compare Miss Nelson and Miss Swamp, compare their classrooms to ours, and finally, discuss what kind of teacher we want this year!

And there’s a rumor that Mr. Greg will be absent this week and Miss Viola Swamp will be subbing for him…

Lesson Plans: Counting To 10

This week we’re continuing Number Bootcamp with numbers 3-7.

We’re focusing on counting and writing numbers to 10 in accordance with our required curriculum and scope and sequence but we’re adding in our own fun ideas and our own fun approach to the lessons to make them more effective.

Up first, we draw pictures of ourselves and count how many kids are in our class! The kids draw on sticky notes and we stick them on our chart!

The next two days we count pigs! We read Ten Pigs An Epic Bath Adventure and count pigs in the bathtub. Day 1 is a whole group lesson where kids get to count pigs into the giant bathtub. Day 2 is independent practice. I show a number and the kids count their pigs into their tub.

The next two days will be counting eggs into egg cartons. True story. This was in our math curriculum so we changed it up a bit. Day 1 will be counting using a giant egg carton posterboard drawn by me. Day 2 students will be counting “eggs” into plastic egg cartons! Why egg cartons? I don’t know but it’s fun!

Lesson Plans: Science And Germs

This week, we will learn about germs and how to stay healthy because, let’s be real, our kids are walking, breathing petri dishes of every germ imaginable. Learning about germs and how to stay healthy can help all of us stay healthier during the year. We start with our very first schema map about germs. We do a can/have/are chart, and we learn how to wash hands through a sequencing activity. All of these activities are done with a read aloud and then we create our graphic organizers together. All of the books are listed in the Germs Research Project.

After we learned about germs, we did our handwashing experiment! We use glow-in-the-dark soap to show students how germs spread and how important it is to wash our hands. After using the soap, we shine the blacklight and show the germs, then we wash our hands and check to see if we got rid of the germs! The directions and materials are linked in the research project.

Lesson Plans: Foodie Fun Friday

This week we will be making school bus cookies! We made pencil cookies last week so this week is school bus cookies!

Foodie Fun Friday is a classroom tradition where we make a snack each Friday.

The recipe is included in our Foodie Fun Friday resource!

Morning Meeting

This week our greeting will be a new PowerPoint greeting. The student’s picture will show pop out of the school bus and we will say “Good Morning” to our friend! Our morning message will be writing the letter of the day!
