We all know how important phonics are to our students’ success. We also know how important the review and practice of phonics skills is. Teaching to mastery is one thing. But if we don’t continue to review and practice those skills, the mastery fades. That’s why we love these phonics projects. They’re a fun way to review and practice our skills and they make super cute spring bulletin boards and Easter crafts!
And…let’s be real. We all love a cute door or hallway display with a cute Easter craft or spring craft project. But we also know certain people are looking to see if what we do is standards-based, so why not combine cute spring bulletin board ideas with standards-based activities?! We get it. And we have just the idea.
Spring Bulletin Board Ideas: Practice And Assess
We use our spring phonics project as an assessment tool. I print the skill I want to assess. Each student is assessed 1-on-1. I call them to my table, and we go through the words, letters, sounds, etc. If they get it correct in 3 seconds, I put a small dot. If they don’t get it, we leave it blank. After we assess, the students take the pages and color only the ones with a dot or mark.

After we finish coloring, we cut out the petals or eggs. For our Basket of Eggs, we glue the eggs in the basket. For our Flowering Phonics, we glue the flowers onto a paper plate, then cut a circle of paper for the center of each flower.

Now, let’s have a quick chat about this. We get lots of questions about this display and how it might affect students. So here’s how we approach this:
First, the names are on the back, so no one knows who the projects belong to. No students are identified.
Second, we spend a lot of time in our kindergarten class talking about how we are all different, and we all learn differently, and THAT IS OK! When we finish the one-on-one assessment, we chat about what we can do to learn more words, letters, etc., and get more eggs or petals. Not only are we assessing, but we’re also using this as an opportunity to encourage our students and talk to them about what they can do and WHAT WE CAN DO AS TEACHERS to help them be more successful!
And since this resource is editable, we can assess any skill, so we can match the skill to the student, so every child can be successful!

These projects are EDITABLE so you can assess any phonics or math skill!
