Week 28 of kindergarten is busy with blends, 3D shapes, past, and present, weather and spring! Our kindergarten lesson plan ideas are full of hands-on lessons, lots of fun, and effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plan Ideas: Phonics And Blends
This week, we are working on blends! For each blend, we do a circle chart, word sort, decodable text, dictation, and a decoding activity! After a week of Blends Bootcamp, my students had 80% mastery of blends!
We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with blends. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!
Lesson Plan Ideas For Kindergarten: Past And Present
This week, we continue with our required curriculum, which is all about the past and present. This week, we’re learning about transportation today and long ago and we’re reading the book Now And Ben to learn about the inventions of Ben Franklin! My kids actually love this book and learning about the inventions we still use!
We start with questions we have about the text. Then, we answer questions that we can! We also work on the main idea and details, and we compare inventions from long ago to now; those inventions help us!
We also watch a video of someone playing the armonica that Ben invented!
Lesson Plan Ideas For Kindergarten: 3D Shapes
This week, we are working with 3D shapes! We work on attributes, sorts and we go on a 3D shape hunt in the classroom! And we celebrate with a shape party!
For our shape hunt, the kids find objects in the classroom for 3D shapes. We identify the shapes and attributes and I take pictures of the kids with their shapes. We print the pictures and use them for sorting onto our shape circle charts!
Finally, we celebrate with a shape party! We have done a 2D shape party and a 3D shape party and we have one a combined shape party! We use snacks to identify shapes and their attributes. So basically we are eating our assessment!
Kindergarten Lesson Plan Ideas: Weather And Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
This week, we kick off our weather unit. Our traditional weather kickoff is with my favorite book ever: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. I even do a very low-key classroom transformation!
We make predictions, a story map, and even what’s real and fantasy! And we also write about food we would want to fall from the sky!
We also do our cloudy with a chance of meatballs art project!
Kindergarten Lesson Plan Ideas: Weather
We also start our weather unit. For this unit we do a daily weather observation and record our data in our journals. We use this data to talk about how weather impacts our lives and how we adapt to the weather. We also learn about different kids of weather after starting our schema map!
This week we do a hands-on science experiment with the the wind. We get to be the wind and see how far we can move a feather!
