Week 12 is here, and for us, it’s parent conference week, which means a short 4-day week! And we’ve packed the week with scarecrow activities for kindergarten, Día de los Muertos activities for kindergarten, addition and subtraction, farms, and more! Keep reading to see what we have planned for the week!

Word Family Bootcamp: Decoding and Spelling CVC Words
Now that we’ve finished ABC BOOTCAMP, we’re moving on to Word Family Bootcamp and CVC words. While we’ve been working with CVC words during ABC BOOTCAMP, now is when we focus on them. We’re going to explicitly teach segmenting, decoding, blending, spelling, writing, and reading CVC words. We do circle charts, dictation, decodable texts, lots of blending and decoding practice, and lots of fun games! This week is OG and OT words!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: Sight Words
This week we’re continuing Sight Word 60 and explicit instruction with sight words. The kids did so well with week 1! I was pleasantly surprised, so I can’t wait to see how well they do this week! We do them in order of our phonics skills, so they align (as best they can…don’t stress this and don’t let socials harass you about this…) to our phonics instruction.

The routine is this:
Monday-introduce the words
Tuesday and Wednesday-review the words and use them in a sentence
Thursday-sight word grid
Friday-game

A Year at Maple Hill Farm activities
This week we continue our farm unit by reading The Year At Maple Hill Farm. We will be working on questions and answers and doing a seasons sort with clothing.

Kindergarten addition and subtraction activities
This week, we continue our join and separate” unit in math. Our required curriculum calls it join and separate. We call it add and subtract. This week is some fun (and random lessons) going between add and subtract.
Up first…beaver subtraction. See. Random. So, per the usual, our curriculum has kids looking at slides, and that’s it. So we, of course, bring this to life with pretzel sticks! We use the same skill, same language, but no slides. AND we do more than 1 or 2 practice problems!

Then we subtract pizza.

We also do a lesson where the kids look at a slide showing books on a bookshelf and solve the equations. UMMMM. Yeah. How about we use real books and put them on a shelf and solve the equation. Like, how is staring at a slide a “high-quality instructional material?”
And finally, we add goldfish in the fish tank!

Día de los Muertos activities for kindergarten
This week, we will celebrate Día de los Muertos! We read a book and watch a video to learn about this holiday and record our learning on a circle chart. Then we draw a sugar skull.

Scarecrow activities for kindergarten
This week we’re using our completely updated Scarecrows unit to learn about scarecrows! We’re doing graphic organizers, a science experiment, labeling, art, and making a new, fun scarecrow snack!

Parent-Teacher Conferences
This week is parent-teacher conferences. Unlike social media, we keep our conferences simple. We share data, strengths, and areas for improvement. We use these forms, which parents, families, and admin love!
