What do you do for the first week of school? What should I focus on for back-to-school with my kids? Help! I need kindergarten lesson plans for the first week of school. Guess what? We have you covered.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughter and prepare for our second daughter, due on December 21!! So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: First Week Procedures
The first week of school is all about getting to know your kids, them getting to know you and establishing procedures. Here are the 7 procedures I teach on day 1 and focus on for week 1:

First Week Of School Read Alouds
Using read-alouds the first week helps students with their feelings and emotions, helps them make connections to books, and is fun! Plus, you can do some comprehension activities to introduce students to curriculum and academics in a fun way! Here are the read-alouds we like to use for week 1 of school and some activities to go with them!
The King Of Kindergarten And The Queen Of Kindergarten

Chrysanthemum

Brown Bear Brown Bear

Your Name Is A Song

We also use our Meet the Teacher book for a first-week read-aloud. This is a fun way for the kids to get to know me. After we read it, it goes in our class library and becomes a very popular choice for independent reading.

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Names
The first week means lots of practice with name writing. On day one, we all write our name on our name chart and then we practice on paper. The rest of the week is name recognition, name writing, torn paper names, and friendship bracelets to practice our names!

How To Use School Supplies
In our classroom we let students establish the procedures and expectations for our school supplies. We create the graphic organizer then we work on our cutting skills with our cut apart puzzles!

First Week Of School Lesson Plans: Math
Our first week of math is focused on playing with manipulatives, number recognition, and counting. We also start Number Botocamp!
Number Recognition Game-pass out number cards. Say the number. Students point out the number.
Counting Game: Pass out plates and manipuatlives. Say a number. Students put the correct number of manipuatlives on the plate.

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Art, Snacks, and Hats
Our first week is packed with learning, but it’s also packed with fun! We have lots of art projects and snacks, and of course, we make first-day and first-week hats!
Friendship salad-fruit salad symbolizes everything we want in classrooms, and no rotten bananas!
Pencil cookies-we make these on the first day of school!
School bus cookies, graham crackers, pretzels, mini Oreos
