Week 3 of the school year means the focus continues on procedures, names, and starting curriculum while still having fun with kindergarten social studies lessons, science activities, hands-on math and more! This blog post is packed with everything I have done in my classroom during week 3 of school. These ideas span years of kindergarten!
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughter and prepare for our second daughter, due on December 21!! So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: ABC BOOTCAMP
Week 3 means it’s ABC BOOTCAMP time! We start ABC BOOTCAMP the second week of school, so we can start on Monday and get a whole week of learning. Not only are we learning sounds, letters, letter formation, working on fine motor skills, and more, but we’re also establishing solid routines. ABC BOOTCAMP works in any order, with any curriculum, or as a stand-alone curriculum. We follow the order of our required curriculum, so the sounds for week 3 are: C, G, I N, and H. And yes, ABC BOOTCAMP is aligned with the science of reading and uses research based best practices.
For each letter/sound, we do a circle chart, explicit handwriting instruction, and make a hat!

These are the new hats included in our TKS BOOTCAMP kit. The students get to choose from two hats. One requires a little assembly, and the other is just color and cut. Week 3 means the students are doing their hats independently. I create the models for them to look at but they do them on their own so I can start pulling small groups!

Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp continues. We know how important phonemic awareness is for our students. We start phonemic awareness with sentences. And we connect phonemic awareness to concrete objects. This week we continue working with sentences by building our sentences using a who and a do!

Kindergarten Social Studies Lesson Plans: Families
This week, we start social studies units by learning about families. Learning about families is perfect for the beginning of the year because it helps us get to know each other, and it’s something that all students can connect to. And let’s be serious for a moment. ALL. FAMILIES. MUST. BE. INCLUDED. Your read-alouds, images, etc, must include all types of families. Beyond that, there are all types of housing, food, clothing, etc.
We use our Families Research Project and read alouds. This week our focus is on who is in our family, where we live and what we do with our families.

The students then use their research journal to write and draw about their families!

And we make self portraits. The students create their own self portrait with guidance. But they do the work. They make the choices. We actually save these and make new portraits at the end of the year to show growth!

We also do our fingerprints when we talk about how we’re all different!

Kindergarten Science Lesson Plans: Five Senses
This week, we start our required curriculum, which means we start our knowledge-building lessons. OK…we’re supposed to start this earlier, but we focus on other things first…and they claim this unit takes 9 weeks…there are five senses, ya’ll. Nine weeks? No thanks! First up is the five senses. We read My Five Senses by Aliki and My Five Senses by Margaret Miller. First, we do things we notice and wonder; we share all the things we can experience with our senses. We draw what we can see and more!

And you can’t learn about the five senses without Mr. Potato Head!

Kindergarten Math Lessons: Numbers And Counting
Week three math is all about numbers and counting. We use Number Bootcamp to work on number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, counting, and math vocabulary. Then we do some fun hands-on math lessons to practice counting to 10 and 20!

This week, we are counting cookies, counting pizza, doing number races, and playing math games!
Cookie counting- day 1, count real cookies! Eat the cookies. Day 2-use Cookie Crisp cereal to count using ten frames to 10 and 20. Day 3 students work in pairs to match quantities.

We also do a number race! We roll a cube on a number mat. Then we can color the number, write or trace the number or make the ten frame. I love that we can use this game to meet every student where they are!

Snack Ideas!
Rainbow parfait! Fruity pebbles and yogurt!

A great five-senses snack is a face! Bananas, apples, and a raspberry!
