Week 22 of kindergarten is busy with digraphs, 2D shapes, past and present, and Groundhog Day! This week’s kindergarten lesson plans are lots of hands-on lessons, lots of fun, and lots of effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Phonics And Digraphs
This week, we are working on beginning and ending digraphs! For each digraph, we do a circle chart, word sort, decodable text, dictation, and a decoding activity! After a week of Blends Bootcamp, my students had 80% mastery of digraphs!

One of the things we notice is that our kids have a hard time identifying the digraphs in words, so we play Digraph Buzz using buzzers! We identify the word and digraph and hit the correct buzzer!
We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with digraphs. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Past And Present
This week, we continue with our required curriculum, which is all about the past and present. This week we’re focusing on school and home from today and long ago! We’re doing questions and answers and sorting activities. This week, we read the books School Then and Now and Home Then and Now. We compare life today to life long ago (like a hundred years…not the 1980’s like my studnets think..).

Kindergarten Lesson Plans For Math: Shapes
This week, we start working with 2D shapes using Shapes Bootcamp!

This week is focused on shape recognition and describing shapes with attributes. Each day, we do a shape graphic organizer to identify the shape, its attributes, and real objects for that shape! This week, we also do our shape hunt and our shape mural.

For our shape hunt, I make giant shapes from bulletin board paper, and the kids find shapes in magazines. They show me the shape and identify the shap,e then sort the shape onto the correct poster.

Our curriculum includes a lesson in which the kids have to draw shapes based on a story. For example, it says you go camping in the woods and sleep in a tent. What shape would the tent be? They identify a triangle. Then they draw the shape in a place that makes sense.

Kindergarten Science Lesson Plans: Groundhog Day
It’s GROUNDHOG DAY! February 2nd is Groundhog Day so we do an entire day of groundhog learning! We use the book Groundhog Gets A Say because it’s a fun story that also shares lots of facts and information about groundhogs!

As we read, we put all of our learning onto our groundhog!

We label a groundhog to learn about adaptations and habitats!

Then we do a coin flip game to graph shadows or no shadows! Kids flip their groundhog coin and graph the results.

We watch Punxatawney Phil to see what his prediction for the weather will be!

And of course, we make a groundhog!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Black History Month
This week we also kick off our Black History Month celebration! Each day we learn about a different person who made an impact on the world and we discuss the lessons we learn from each person. While we celerbate Black History Month in February, this learning continues all year long.

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Groundhog Snack
Our Foodie Fun Friday snack this week is a groundhog snack! We used a brownie, green frosting and a Teddy Graham to show a groundhog emerging from their burrow!

And if you’re celebrating the 100th day or 101st day of school, we got you covered with easy prep and planning!
