Week 24 of kindergarten is busy with digraphs, teen numbers, past and present, Olympics, and Lunar New Year! Our kindergarten weekly lesson plans and activities are full of hands-on lessons, lots of fun, and effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Phonics And Digraphs
This week, we are working on beginning and ending digraphs! For each digraph, we do a circle chart, word sort, decodable text, dictation, and a decoding activity! After a week of Blends Bootcamp, my students had 80% mastery of digraphs! This week, our focus is on NG words. I’ll admit my students struggle with this concept if I teach the-ng sounds on its own. If i teach -ing, -ang, -ung, -ong they do MUCH better!

This week, we also use our digital word building tools to help us blend and decode NG words. This week is all about more and more practice because this is a challenging phonics pattern for our kids.

We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with digraphs. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Past And Present
This week, we continue with our required curriculum, which is all about the past and present. This week, we’re reading the story The Little House. We’re doing questions and answers and using text evidence to discuss how the little house changes.

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans For Math: Teen Numbers
This week, we are working with teen numbers!

This week is focused on understanding that teen numbers are made up of ten and some more. Plus, we’re working on writing equations for teen numbers.

Kindergarten Activities: Winter Olympics
The next two weeks, we will be learning about the Olympics. I love the Olympics and love bringing the excitement into the classroom. The Olympics are a great social studies tool for learning about sports, cultures, and geography! Plus, they’re just fun! For each sport, we read a book about the sport, we watch a video of the actual Winter Olympic sport, and create a graphic organizer!

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: Lunar New Year
This week is the start of the Lunar New Year, and we use this as a way to meet social studies standards while learning about cultures, customs, and foods from around the world!

Before Lunar New Year begins, we make lanterns to decorate our classroom!

We use read-alouds and videos to learn about the customs of the Lunar New Year!

Then we learn about the Chinese calendar and the different animals. Students figure out which animal they are, and we write about the animals!

Finally, we celebrate with noodles, fortune cookies, and chopsticks!

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: Teeth
This week, we also start our next science unit, and my least favorite unit of the year: teeth. You see, I HATE teeth. They make me wanna vomit. I don’t do lose teeth. So you can imagine this unit is cringe for me. But the kids love it, and it’s packed full of science standards and learning.

We start with a schema map, and then we use read-alouds and videos to learn about teeth. This week, we will do a schema map, a can/have/are chart, and label the parts of a tooth!

We will also paint a tooth using a toothbrush and make a torn paper tooth!

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: Black History Month
This week, we continue our Black History Month celebration! Each day, we learn about a different person who made an impact on the world, and we discuss the lessons we learn from each person. While we celebrate Black History Month in February, this learning continues all year long.

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: Toothbrush Snack
Our Foodie Fun Friday snack this week is a toothbrush snack using pretzel rods, sugar wafer cookies, and frosting!
