Week 26 of kindergarten is busy with digraphs, addition and subtraction, past, and present, and kicking off our St. Patrick’s Day learning with There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover! Our kindergarten l activities are full of hands-on lessons, lots of fun, and effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Phonics And Digraphs
This week, we are working on beginning and ending digraphs! For each digraph, we do a circle chart, word sort, decodable text, dictation, and a decoding activity! After a week of Blends Bootcamp, my students had 80% mastery of digraphs! This week, our focus is on NG words. I’ll admit my students struggle with this concept if I teach the-ng sounds on its own. If i teach -ing, -ang, -ung, -ong they do MUCH better!

This week, we also use our digital word building tools to help us blend and decode NG words. This week is all about more and more practice because this is a challenging phonics pattern for our kids.

We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with digraphs. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Past And Present
This week, we continue with our required curriculum, which is all about the past and present. This week, we’re learning about communication today and long ago and we’re reading the book Now And Ben to learn about the inventions of Ben Franklin! My kids actually love this book and learning about the inventions we still use!

We start with questions we have about the text. Then, we answer questions that we can! We also work on the main idea and details, and we compare inventions from long ago to now; those inventions help us!

Lesson Plans For Math: Addition and Subtraction
This week, we are working with addition and subtraction using cars! We use story problems, equations and ten frames to practice addition and subtraction! You know the kids love these activities because they get to play with the cars!

Kindergarten Activities: There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover
This week, we kick off March and our St. Patrick’s Day fun! Basically, all things green and leprechaun! This week, we’re reading There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover! These are always a kid’s favorite and make great books for sequencing, rhyming, and predictions!

We work on sequencing and graphing about finding a four leaf clover!

And this week we write about what makes us lucky!

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: St. Patrick’s Day Art
We will work on some torn paper shamrocks, draw a leprechaun, and we will start on our Lucky Charms phonics project this week!

St. Patrick’s Day Snack Idea: Shamrock Shake
This week, our snack is a Shamrock Shake! Vanilla ice cream, green food coloring, and sprinkles!
