Week 25 of kindergarten is busy with digraphs, patterns, past, and present, Black History Month, and teeth! Our kindergarten l activities are full of hands-on lessons, lots of fun, and effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Phonics And Digraphs
This week, we are working on beginning and ending digraphs! For each digraph, we do a circle chart, word sort, decodable text, dictation, and a decoding activity! After a week of Blends Bootcamp, my students had 80% mastery of digraphs! This week, our focus is on NG words. I’ll admit my students struggle with this concept if I teach the-ng sounds on its own. If i teach -ing, -ang, -ung, -ong they do MUCH better!

This week, we also use our digital word building tools to help us blend and decode NG words. This week is all about more and more practice because this is a challenging phonics pattern for our kids.

We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with digraphs. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Past And Present
This week, we continue with our required curriculum, which is all about the past and present. This week, we’re learning about transportation today and long ago! We ask and answer questions, compare transportation now to long ago and share our notice and wonders!

February Lesson Plans For Math: Patterns
This week, we are working with patterns! The focus is on naming and creating patterns! This week, we make patterns with Pop-Its, counting bears, movement, and GOLDFISH!!!!

We start with Pop-It patterns and create AB, ABC, and ABB patterns! The students create patterns on their Pop-Its and then color them on their math worksheets.

Next, we make patterns with counting bears! Again, the kids create the patterns, we name and extend the pattern, and the students color the pattern on their pattern worksheet!

We also make patterns using movements! We clap, stop, and snap! Students get to lead their friends by creating a pattern, then seeing if we can extend the pattern and name it!

And finally, we start building our anchor chart and we discuss where we find patterns in our lives to make those real-life connections!

Kindergarten Activities: Teeth

This week we wrap up our teeth and dental health unit! We use what we’ve learning to sort true and false statements. And we label the parts of a tooth, then graph how many teeth we’ve lost!

Finally, we revisit our schema map and add our new learning and revisit our schema to identify any misconceptions!

We also read Bear’s Loose Tooth and work on our sequencing skills!

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: Black History Month
This week, we continue our Black History Month celebration! Each day, we learn about a different person who made an impact on the world, and we discuss the lessons we learn from each person. While we celebrate Black History Month in February, this learning continues all year long.

Kindergarten Weekly Lesson Plans: Toothbrush Snack
Our Foodie Fun Friday snack this week is a torch snack in honor of Wintr Olympics coming to a close!

Kindergarten Activities: Tooth Brushing Science Activity
This week’s science experiment is a tooth brushing experiment! After learning about dental health and teeth I challenge the kids to see how clean they get some teeth! The teeth? Boiled eggs that have been soaked in soda so they’re stained. The kids use a toothbrush and toothpaste to see how clean they can get their teeth!
