Week 4 of the school year means the focus continues on procedures, establishing centers, and having fun with kindergarten activities for social studies, science, hands-on math and more! This blog post is packed with everything I have done in my classroom during week 4 of school. These ideas span years of kindergarten!
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughter and prepare for our second daughter, due on December 21!! So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: ABC BOOTCAMP
Week 4 means it’s ABC BOOTCAMP time! ABC BOOTCAMP works in any order, with any curriculum, or as a stand-alone curriculum. We follow the order of our required curriculum, so the sounds for week 4 are: S, F, V, Z, P. And yes, ABC BOOTCAMP is aligned with the science of reading and uses research based best practices.
For each letter/sound, we do a circle chart, explicit handwriting instruction, and make a hat!

These are the new hats included in our TKS BOOTCAMP kit. The students get to choose from two hats. One requires a little assembly, and the other is just color and cut. Week 4 means the students are doing their hats independently. I create the models for them to look at, but they do them on their own, so I can start pulling small groups!

Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp continues. We know how important phonemic awareness is for our students. We start phonemic awareness with sentences. And we connect phonemic awareness to concrete objects. This week, we are on skill two: identifying onset sounds. Here’s what makes Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp unique. We do our phonemic awareness circle chart to determine the beginning sound by attaching the sound to pictures (no letters), so we can focus on hearing the sound. THEN we immediately move to ABC BOOTCAMP, where we learn the sound and the spelling (letter name) of the sound. They work perfectly together and give students a rock-solid foundation in phonemic awareness and phonics!

Kindergarten Activities: All About My Family
This week, we continue learning about families. Learning about families is perfect for the beginning of the year because it helps us get to know each other, and it’s something that all students can connect to. And let’s be serious for a moment. ALL. FAMILIES. MUST. BE. INCLUDED. Your read-alouds, images, etc, must include all types of families. Beyond that, there are all types of housing, food, clothing, etc.
We use our Families Research Project and read alouds. This week is my favorite. We read the book My Daddy Snores and we talk about how our family irritates us. After we make our graphic organizer, I send a picture of to the families! We also graph if we have a pet and how many people are in our family!

The students then use their research journal to write and draw about their families!

Kindergarten Activities: Five Senses
This week, we continue our required curriculum, which is our knowledge-building lessons. OK…we’re supposed to start this earlier, but we focus on other things first…and they claim this unit takes 9 weeks…there are five senses, ya’ll. Nine weeks? No thanks! This week we’re doing sensory jars to determine which senses we use and we work on adjective to describe senses.

And we paint our hands to use four of our senses: sight, touch, smell and hearing!

Kindergarten Activities: Math Lessons: Numbers And Counting
Week four math is all about numbers and counting. We use Number Bootcamp to work on number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, counting, and math vocabulary. And we start our unit on sorting and classifying to count and compare how many!

This week, we start our sorting unit. We learn to sort by attributes, and we build in a lot of conversations about our sorting. We sort by colors, size, shape, etc. This week we’re sorting breakfast, making a rainbow, and answering Would You Rather questions!

Kindergarten Activities: Science Experiments
Week 4 is when we introuce our hands-on science experiments. Each week we do a science experiment so we can bring science to life and the kids can get real science experience. Our first experiment is MAGIC POTION!

Kindergarten Activities: 5 Senses Snack Ideas!
This week we use our Foodie Fun Friday snack to work on our five senses by eating popcorn. We use an air popper to pop popcorn. Then we eat the popcorn. Finally we use our five senses to describe the popcorn. Hot take: Use an air popper. Take the top off. And let the popcorn fly. INSTANT SQUEALS AND GIGGLES!
