The Saturday Kindergarten Post: Volume 2

Today marks the official start of my birthday month!  It’s a month-long celebration of ME!  It’s all Greg all the time!  Gifts from Target, Old Navy, clip art websites or any teacher related store are always accepted.  I’m totally kidding.  You can ask the fiancee’, I am not someone who makes anything about me.  But it’s still fun to have a birthday month celebration!!!!!!   Join in the fun!

I am supposed to write a guest blog for someone tomorrow but I have NO ideas who it was for.  If you’re the most fortunate person, please let me know!  If you’re not and want me to write a guest blog for you, let me know!

It’s time for my weekly roundup of the madness, chaos, stress, and laughter of our week at Monsters Inc.  Oh yeah, and some learning might take place amid the singing, crafting, and laughing!

This was the highlihgt of the week for me and the kids!  We made self portraits!  I love this activity.  I crack up at how the kids perceive themselves.  I keep these until the end of the year and we do the activity again and then we compare them to see how much we’ve grown and changed!

Side note…in the background of the picture you can see one of the 7 adults in my room trying to “solve the problem I created with the sisters.”  Um, there is no problem and they all said they have no clue what to do.  Um, I know, I know.  Pick me.  Pick me.  LEAVE US ALONE!  Thanks!  End of side note.
Double chin!
This week we did the letter A and the sound of A.  To celebrate A we did picture sorts and made hats with ants!  We also made the letter A out of apple jacks!  Friday we made applesauce.  The kids loved the applesauce.  And it makes the room smell so good.  Isn’t it nice when the Friday kid aroma is masked by a yummy smell?!

We introduced the iPad this week too.  This means that Mr. Greg is a hero!  Nuff said.
This week we were really able to get into our center routines.  The past week of center introductions was rough so I was worried that we might never get there.  They proved me wrong!!  This week they handled centers much better.  It’s a good thing, because the teacher was really guzzling the Coke Zeroes to get through the centers.  What would I do without my Coke Zero?  Now if only I could get Sonic to deliver me an afternoon Route 44 Coke Zero with easy ice.   HMMM

Kindergarten teacher in a little shirt!
We wrapped up our month long celebration of the Olympics with the Measurement Olympics!  And because each participant completed their Olympic events, we were awarded with Olympic t-shirts!  We had a blast throwing and jumping for our Olympic events.  The great thing about this fun was that also helped us work on our one-to-one correspondence when counting our medals.
Don’t you love the t-shirts?  I’ll admit I was stressed out thinking about 17 little monsters making Olympic rings with paint and Solo cups!  I am so lucky to have an amazing mother who told me on day one that she would help me with anything I needed.  She has already cut a bunch of stuff out for me and she came to help make the shirts.  Can you believe it went so smooth?  And the shirts turned out so cute.  I am glad I did this with my kids!  Can I just say that we looked spectacular and cool as we walked down the hall!
As we wrapped up our month long teamwork and friendship unit I decided to debut my children’s book to my class.  It was a HUGE hit!  They totally got the message!  I was so excited to read it for an audience of kids and see how much they loved it!  Mr. Greg=HERO!
This week our focus was on number writing!  The kids got use the Smart Board during center time to practice writing numbers!  Again, Mr. Greg=hero!
Read to self!  Yes it’s going well.  I love how much they love books and reading!  One of my friends (my severely ADHD friend would read his truck book 8 hours a day if I would let him.  I am in the process of creating monster truck themed centers for him to help keep him focused!)  I made some one word readers for us to use during Read to Self and they’ve been a huge hit!  Find them here!  I am currently working on making them into one sentence emergent readers for my higher readers!  Stay tuned.  Books about bugs=Mr. Greg is a HERO!
This picture is my special ELL friend.  The amazing thing about this picture is that she isn’t holding her sister’s hand!!!!!!  She is reading a book alone!!!!!  Huge milestone.  Of course, this lasted 3.45 minutes and we were back to sister.  People, it’s progress.  And I am all about progress!
Wednesday was a very special and exciting day for Mr. Greg’s Little Monsters at Monsters Inc.  This was the day that our very special reading buddy, Bear the Reading Dog came to visit us!  Can you say ecstatic?  Today we learned about Bear and his owner, Leigh!  We learned the rules about reading to Bear and everyone spent some time with Bear.  Leigh is so good with the kids.  She let them brush Bear and she talked about how she takes care of him.  Then each child got to feed him a treat!   Next week, each child gets to read Bear a book!  Again, Mr. Greg=HERO!  Are you picking up on this theme??  I keep telling you I am a rock-star of kindergarten!  You should listen!
And a little fun on the monkey bars!  Are we supposed to have favorites?!  Cuz um, yeah.  He OWNS me!  He says ” Me have to tell you something.”  And when I correct him to say “I have…” his eye twitches and his face scrunches and he says “Me…Me…Me…I…Me..I have…”  I need to get a video because it’s super spectacular.
I hope you enjoyed the journey through our week!  Were you inspired to try something new?  Do you have some great ideas to share?    Did you learn that Mr. Greg=HERO?
34 days until the BIG DAY!  I promise I will not overwhelm my blog and all of you innocent bystanders with wedding stuff….OK, I liked.  I promise I will try not to…how’s that?
