Happy Friday-eve.  Can we say exhausted?!?  And after I write this post, I am going to make gingerbread cookies for the monsters to decorate tomorrow.  OK, not real “gingerbread” because, um that recipe is complicated.  I found this great new invention called Icing Creations.  You buy an icing starter (fancy name for tub of icing!) and a seasoning packet.  I bought gingerbread.  So we have gingerbread shaped cookies with gingerbread flavored icing.  It works.  Now, I have to embark on this baking endeavor alone.  Help!  If I don’t post a blog tomorrow, I probably burned down the house or the gingerbread men got the best of me!  I am pretty confident that the kindergarten smorgasboard is going to be a hot mess after this adventure with cookie dough!

Yesterday and today we have been working on measurement!  My monsters have really gotten into measuring things so I’ve tried to find way to keep them engaged and learning!  If they like it, keep doing it! RIGHT?!  So measurement….and who doesn’t love CANDY!  That’s right, we’ve been using candy to measure.  And since this is our big gingerbread week, we’ve been measuring gingerbread!

Yesterday, we measured how big our pictures were.  We had a great discussion about starting at the top of the picture and placing our candy side by side all the way to the bottom of the picture.

After we measured with our kisses and peppermints, we recorded our answers on our class chart and our own recording sheet.
Today we used our pictures and candy to measure the area and perimeter!  Yes, area and perimeter in Kindergarten!  Bold and daring!!
We learned that perimeter is going around the outside or on the edges.  We measured with kisses and peppermints and recorded our results.  We also discussed why it took more kisses than peppermints and they were very keen on the fact that the kisses were smaller so it took more of them!
After we measured the perimeter, we moved onto area.  We learned that area is when you cover the whole picture.

After we measured the area, we recorded our answers!  We also discussed how it took a lot more candy to measure the area because we were covering the whole picture!
We had a lot of fun with this activity and I am confident that my students have a good foundation of area and perimeter!  This is also a great way to address the Common Core Standards for measurement!
And of course, we just had to finish our measurement fun by eating some (some…not all…) of our candy!
This activity is available in my Gingerbread Measurement pack!
