Happy DAY BEFORE V-DAY!  My monsters have gone completely loopy!!!  Seriously, running around the room.  RUNNING!  Like a day at the races.  It’s only a matter of time before we have some cracked faces from face meets chair!   Hopefully they will go into chocolate coma Friday and be back to normal!

Word Problems?  In kindergarten?!  True story.  We did it today.  We will do it again Friday.  We rock the common core!!!

We have been working on addition this week and the monsters are ROCKING!  They have this addition business down!  Today we moved onto word problems.  And guess what?!  They ROCKED it too!  After about 3 or 4 problems, they were solving the problems on their own.  Proud teacher moment!

I projected the problems on the Smart Board.  We read through the problems together, pointing out the numbers and the key words.  We used dinosaur manipulatives and work mats to solve the problems.

You can see the word problems projected on the Smart Board!  The dinosaur manipulatives were purchased at Wal-Mart after Halloween at 75% off!  YAY for clearance!

After we solved several word problems using our dinosaurs, we moved onto paper and pencil!  Again BAM!  WHOOP!  They did it so well!!

I love the circle dinosaurs!
Using the work mats makes a big difference because they have a physical space to help them understand and visualize the two separate amounts.  They can then physically “put together” the two amounts.  This physical and visual engagement made this lesson stimulating and engaging and really allowed the monsters to GET IT!  WOOHOO!  And the dinosaurs help too!  I mean, who doesn’t love a dinosaur?!
These activities came from my Dino Mite Addition Pack!  Click on the picture to check it out!
We also worked on this super cute craftivity today!  It goes so well with the book, Froggy’s First Kiss, which my monsters LOVE!
The pattern is available in my Valentine’s Day pack!  I have marked it 50% off!  Check it out if you need a simple last minute craftivity or center activities or writing prompts and writing paper for tomorrow!  (And it’s totally OK to use holiday centers after the holiday.  The Kindergarten Smorgasaboard gives you permission!)
And as you’re planning for a Presidential week next week, check out this research and writing pack!

Looks like a lot of fun! Is the work mat in your Dino pack too? I really like how big it is to help the kids understand the part, part, whole.
