A Kindergarten Smorgasboard Schedulin’ Sunday: December 8th, 2013

Yep, it’s that time again!  A little lesson planning and materials prep for the week!!   This week kicks off our two week Gingerbread Man adventure!  Plus…subtraction and assessments…and winter break fast approaching!  It’s gonna be a wild ride!
As always, you can click to download my lesson plans for the week.
Monday
We kick off our gingerbread adventure with the book The Gingerbread Boy.  After reading the story, we will complete our story comparison chart.  This is a chart featuring 5 gingerbread stories where we compare the characters, setting, and plot from each story.  As we are working on our chart, a mysterious note will fall from the book.  This note will tell us that our gingerbread man is lost in the school and we must find him.  We will embark on a gingerbread man hunt!  Once we follow all of the clues and return to the classroom, we will find cookies and a gingerbread man hat to make!
We will be using this super fun and easy to set up (hello easy set-up=happy teacher!) gingerbread man hunt from my friend Nicole at Teaching With Style!
As part of our gingerbread man adventure, we read a poem that repeats the gingerbread man’s chant about running away.  At the end of the poem, it reads, “I ran away from…” and I change out pictures of different people and animals so each time we read the poem it changes.  On the very last read through I slip in a picture of myself!  Insanity ensues!  They love seeing that picture to the teacher!
The poem is available in my Holly Jolly Christmas creation!
We will write our reasons for why we think the gingerbread man keeps running away.
We will do our word study and sort our words and pictures.
In math, we are continuing with subtraction.  Today we will be subtracting french fries.  Sadly, not the real kind…but it’s still fun!
The ‘staches cut out a red rectangle and glue 3 sides to their paper. Then they cut up to 10 french fries from yellow paper.  They write how many fries they have.  They place them in their fry box and then “eat” some of the fries be removing them.  They write how many they removed and the answer to the subtraction problem!  Super fun, super hands on and engaging!   And really…who doesn’t love french fries!
To extend the lesson, you can practice by writing equations on the board and solving them.  And then you can have students do their own equation on their paper.
Tuesday
The Great Gingerbread Man Adventure continues!  Today we will read the story The Gingerbread Man and add the story to our comparison chart!
We will review our beginning sounds and sight words.  We will read our gingerbread man poem.
In writing, we will be writing our sentence from yesterday and illustrating our sentence.
In math, more subtraction fun!  Today we will be sticker subtraction!  This will be done in small groups.  The ‘staches will be completing a practice page and math tubs while groups work on this subtraction lesson.

There are 2 subtraction sheets in this little freebie.  The first already has equations written (for students who need more practice) and a sheet that has no equations (for students who need to be challenged)!  The ‘staches will use stickers to solve their subtraction equations!  I mean, come on, who doesn’t love stickers?!
We will wrap up day of the gingerbread man with this adorable and free gingerbread craftivity from Mrs. Miner’s Kindergarten Monkey Business!
You can click the picture to visit Mrs. Miner and snag your freebie!
Wednesday
The adventure continues with the book:  The Gingerbread Boy.
After reading and discussing the story, we will add this story to our comparison chart.
In math, subtraction week continues!  We’ve subtracted french fries and stickers so far this week!  Today we will subtract teeth!  True story!  Heidi Songs has this amazingly fun (and a little gross for this teacher who has a major phobia of loose teeth…seriously…I can handle blood, pee and every other fluid or substance from 5 year olds, but a loose tooth does me in…hardcore fear, people.  My worst nightmare would be a clown with a bunch of loose teeth…shew, i’m all sweaty and upset just thinking of teeth…) subtraction activity where students use dry erase markers to subtract teeth and write equations!
We will wrap up another day with a super fun and easy gingerbread man craftivity!  All you need is some paint, yarn, pom poms, paper plates and construction paper!
Thursday
Gingy week continues!  Today we will read The Gingerbread Girl and add the details to our story map!
Today’s writing will be a predictable chart where we get to pretend to be the gingerbread man!  If I were the gingerbread man/girl, I would….
In math, we continue subtracting with a fun little gingerbread man activity!
Each student will get foil and construction paper to make a “cookie sheet” and some gingerbread cookies to put on the sheet.  They will decide how many (up to 5) and then they will decide how many of their cookies to “eat!”  They will fill out the recording sheet and solve the equation!

Friday!
Sadly I will be out for a textbook adoption meeting.  However, I have a super star sub covering my class so we can continue our gingerbread man adventure.
Today the class will read The Gingerbread Cowboy and add the details to our comparison chart.
Then they will vote for their favorite gingerbread man story for the week.
And, with the substitutes permission (she’s a rock star!), they will get to decorate gingerbread cookies!
And not just any gingerbread cookies…no sir, no ma’am…that just won’t fly with Mr. Greg…
We’re doing NINJABREAD MAN!
These are epic!  Way to go Target!
