Dr. Seuss And Making 10: Schedulin’ Sunday

schedulin sunday arctic animals

Happy  Schedulin’ Sunday! This week we’re celebrating Dr.  Seuss and Read Across America and working on decomposing numbers to 10 and making numbers to 10!

Now I know that you can usually download my weekly lesson plans, but I’m gonna be out of the classroom some this week so I didn’t write plans!  BUT you can download all of my lesson plans from this year and years past by going to the RESOURCE CENTER at the top of the page and you’ll see links to all of my lesson plans!

Dr. Seuss Week

We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss and Read Across America week!  Now, to be 100% honest I am a fan of many of the Dr. Seuss books, but not a fan of others.  And I’m definitely not a fan of the Dr. Seuss company….but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate our love of reading, right?!

Here are some of my favorite Dr. Seuss ideas and activities!

Thing 1 and Thing 2 hats!   I cut red strips of construction paper and gave each student 10 or so strips of blue paper.  We curled the paper and glued them on to our paper.  BAM!  Thing 1 and Thing 2 hats!

We read The Lorax and talk about the ways we can take care of our Earth.  We make Lorax Mustaches, do marble paintings of the Earth and write about how we will love our Earth!

Of course, we read Green Eggs And Ham and we eat green egss and ham.  Then we graph whether we liked green eggs and ham.  This is a Dr. Seuss REQUIREMENT!

We also have book character day.  This is my Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs costume!!!

This week we’re also continuing  Vowel Bootcamp!   We are working on reading and writing CVC-E words and segmenting the sounds in the words!

vowel bootcamp

I did a pre-assessment on short and long A and short and long o.   48% of my ‘staches could heard the two vowel sounds and about the same could read the words.   After two days of vowel bootcamp, 85% could hear the sounds and 90% could read the words!!   I was so pumped for them and so thrilled to see their growth!

Math

In math, we will be working on decomposing numbers to 10 and making 10!

Making 10 Snap Cube Towers

making 10

The ‘staches get 2 colors of snap cubes and build a tower of 10.  We write the equations on white boards and share.  We do this several times to show all the ways we can make 10.  The lesson closure/assessment is for the ‘staches to make their tower of 10, draw their tower using the correct colors and write the equation!

We will also go bowling to make ten!

We use these cute bunny eggs to do bunny bowling during our centers/hippopotamus time.  But this year we’re going to use our regular bowling pins!   Students bowl and we count how many pins fell and how many are standing!  Then we write our equation!

And finally, we make cookies to make 10!
