Happy Schedulin’ Sunday! This week we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, learning all about Push and Pull in science and adding to 10!
Valentine’s Day is my least favorite holiday. The Mister and I don’t celebrate. We actually order pizza and watch scary movies! But in our class, we’re gonna party it up!

Push And Pull Research Project
We will be kicking off a brand new unit for us this week! We’re going to be learning about push and pull in science. I am so excited to spend the next two weeks on this because I LOVE science and love geeking out with my kids on this kind of stuff. I am working on creating our Push And Pull Research Project to go along with all of our awesome activities so stay tuned for that! Here’s what we have planned: (Stay tuned for a blog post with videos and pictures of these ideas…)
We will kick off Push And Pull with the book The Gigantic Turnip.
After reading the book we will discuss push and pull and create an anchor chart. Then we will do a Venn Diagram to sort pictures of activities into a push or a pull.
On day 2, we will get to do some pushing and pulling! The kids will get to push and pull their friends using laundry baskets! We will make some predictions about which is easier: pushing or pulling our friends in a basket. The kids will sit in a laundry basket and get pushed and pulled. We will measure how far we go. We will also try different surfaces: carpet and tile to see if there is a difference!
Friday will be explosive! We will be making Alka Seltzer Rockets to see how force makes rockets go up! Alka Seltzer Rockets are included in my Mad Science Creation!
Valentine’s Day
This week of course is Valentine’s Day! We’re celebrating with a party on Tuesday!
The class will exchange Valentine’s Day cards and we will make our Valentine’s Day Parfait!
And of course there’s a silly hat for Valentine’s Day!
Here’s a fun idea for a cheap and easy gift for your students:
SOCKS! You can get a 6 pack of fun socks at Wal-Mart. My kids love this gift every year. They immediately put the new socks on!

This week we’re also continuing Vowel Bootcamp! We are working on reading and writing CVC-E words and segmenting the sounds in the words!
I did a pre-assessment on short and long A and short and long o. 48% of my ‘staches could heard the two vowel sounds and about the same could read the words. After two days of vowel bootcamp, 85% could hear the sounds and 90% could read the words!! I was so pumped for them and so thrilled to see their growth!
Math
In math, we will be working on adding numbers to 10 and our lessons and activities will have a big focus on Valentine’s Day and movement! A couple of these are NEW activities and ideas so I don’t have pictures or videos, but stay tuned and I’ll do a post ASAP!
Cupid Addition
We will play Cupid Addition. I found this idea on Pinterest and modified it for addition. We will have 2 sets of pink plates numbered 0-5. I bought 2 foam roses from The Dollar Tree. Each student will be “cupid” and will throw both roses at the plates. When the roses land on a plate we will use those 2 numbers to add! The students will write the equation no a white board and solve!

Candy Heart Addition
The second Valentine’s Day addition activity will be using candy hearts! I will tell the ‘staches a story about candy hearts. They will put candy hearts on their plate and then we add more hearts to add!
Hula Hoop Addition:
We will use a hula hoop and dice to add! We will roll our giant inflatable dice. Roll 1 will be how many girls go into the hula hoop. Roll 2 will be how many boys go into the hula hoop. My ‘staches will write the equation and answer on their recording sheet!
