Blends BOOTCAMP

This week we are continuing  Blends BOOTCAMP!  This week we are starting with digraph CH and we will spend all week on this digraph.  We will do a digraph a week and then we move to vowels after Christmas break.

abc bootcamp

As with all components of TKS Bootcamp, we start with the circle chart.  Then we will work on building and writing TH words.  We will also sort TH and F words.  During small groups, we’re using the Word Family Bootcamp Decodable readers to work on our decoding and blending skills!  These books have been a huge hit with the kids and have really boosted their confidence in reading and writing words!

Read It Up:  Gingerbread Man

This week I am so excite to start our two week gingerbread man unit!  One reason I am excited about this is because we are using our new Read It Up creation for gingerbread man.  Our Read It Up creation allows you to work on building our comprehension skills.  What I am most excited about  is that we have two weeks to really dig into these gingerbread man stories!  We will write about the stories, compare and contrast stories and incorporate math and STEM skills!

reading comprehension kindergarten

One of the main pieces of our gingerbread unit is reading various versions of the story and creating a chart to compare and contrast the stories!  At the end of the week we will graph our favorite version  write about our favorite version!  All of these activities and resources are included in our Read It Up creation!

This week we are also working on reading comprehension with Doctor Desoto!  We’re working on problem/solution, sequencing and personification!

Math:  Subtraction Story Problems

In math we are working on subtraction story problems with math tasks.  This week the students will work in pairs to solve subtraction math tasks.  Then they will explain to the class how they solved the problem!

We are also practicing subtraction with our Get Off My Boat game!  This is always a class favorite!  It gets the kids involved in subtraction, gets them giggling and laughing and gives them very concrete practice with a challenging concept!

Check out this fun subtraction game in action:

Mad Science Thursday

This week our  Mad Science science experiment is gingerbread STEM!  We will predict if the gingerbread man will sink or float.  Then we toss him in the water to set our hypothesis.  Next, we use foil and tape to build our gingerbread man a boat to get him across the water!
