Schedulin Sunday: 2s Day, Adding To 10, Billy Goats Gruff And African American Heroes

This week is 2s Day! We are celebrating Tuesday, 2-22-22 all day long on Tuesday! We’re also adding to 10 with cars, reading Three Billy Goats Gruff, and learning about African American Heroes!

Note: This year, my goal is to show you that you can use our TKS resources along with required curriculums and continue to have fun, so you’ll see that happening throughout the school year!

District Guidelines

  • We are required to wear masks indoors but not at recess.
  • We can have shared supplies and centers while maintaining 3 feet of distance when possible.
  • We are keeping our enhanced cleaning procedures (wipe down surfaces throughout the day, steam sanitize the room daily, hand sanitizer/hand washing throughout the day, steam mop the floors daily, etc)
  • I have added an air purifier to our classroom after reading the research from Johns Hopkins that these can help reduce the spread of Covid and other germs. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PURIFIER I ORDERED!

Lesson Plans

As always, you can download our weekly lesson plans by clicking on the image!

Blends BOOTCAMP

In keeping with the pacing of our foundational skills curriculum, we’re continuing Blends Bootcamp this week. Our mandated foundational skills curriculum adds blends to the decoding work we do, so we’re going to use Blends Bootcamp to support that work. We’re doing TH, CH, and TH words this week. We will be working on blending and writing words with digraphs.

And yes, Blends Bootcamp and the entire TKS BOOTCAMP curriculum are aligned to the science of reading. And it has been from day 1 because that’s how I was taught to teach reading so it’s what I’ve always done!

King Of Ing

This week we’re also working with -ing words! We will be using our King Of Ing resource to build, read and write ing words!

Sight Word 60!

This week we are continuing Sight Word 60! After spending the summer learning more about the science of reading, we are continuing with Sight Word 60. We have always had decoding and encoding (writing) of the words as part of Sight Word 60 so we will continue that and will increase the amount of decoding and writing. We will also use orthographic mapping and we’re changing our order of sight words to align to the 109 most frequent words (even though we do 100 words…). You can learn all the details of how Sight Word 60 works on the linked blog post and you can get everything you need for Sight Word 60 in our Sight Word 60 creation!

Read It Up: Billy Goats Gruff

We are continuing with unit 2 of our required curriculum. This week we are using the text Three Billy Goats Gruff! I love fairy tales so I’m so excited to read this story this week! This week we are working on character traits, comparing and contrasting characters, and writing about problems and solutions!

African American Heroes Research Project

This week we are celebrating Black History Month by learning about African American heroes! I do want to say this: we also use this research project throughout the year. One thing we have tried to do in our classroom is making our themes/units more inclusive so we pull our Heroes Research Projects into all parts of our school year. So we’re celebrating Black History Month this month but we don’t limit our learning to February.

Each day we will read about a different hero, complete a graphic organizer and write about the person. We also do a directed drawing of each hero! This week we are learning about Oprah (she’s one of my personal heroes and she is a Nashville girl!), Wilma Rudolph (another Nashville hero), Jackie Robinson, and Mae Jemison!

All of our directed drawings are from The Creative Camper on TPT!!

Here are our African American Heroes read alouds! Click the image to see them on Amazon!

2s Day! 2-22-22

Of course, we are celebrating TWOS-Day on Tuesday, 2-22-22! I am so excited to wear tutus, ties, mismatch shoes, and socks, count by 2s, make hats, and design our own shoes! And EAT TACOS!!! Make sure to grab our 2s day creation for lesson ideas, decorations, writing activities, bingo, 2 minutes to win it games and so much more! This resource has everything you need for 2s day and it makes your planning and prep EASY!

Math-Adding To 10

This week we’re working on adding to 10 and we’re using our newest creation Math It Up! Adding Cars! We will be adding cars all week! For real. We’re using toy cars to add and solve equations!

Monday-How Many Cars- Students will solve equations by using cars. I will tell a story like “Mr. Greg has 3 cars. He got 5 more cars. How many cars does he have?” Students will write and solve the equations.

Wednesday-Cars In The Garage-Students will have a picture of a garage. I will tell a story and students will move the cars into the garages. They will write and solve the equations.

Thursday-small groups-Cars on the road. Students will put cars on a road and move them together to solve addition to 10 equations!

Morning Meeting Greeting

This week our morning meeting greeting is our shoe greeting! This greeting seems perfect since shoes come in pairs and we’re celebrating 2s day! Students remove one shoe and place it in the middle of the circle. When it’s your turn, grab 1 shoe. Find who the shoe belongs to and greet that person!
