Week 20 of kindergarten is busy with digraphs, teen numbers, Three Billy Goats Gruff, penguins and learning about Martin Luther King Jr. This week’s kindergarten lesson plans are lots of hands-on lessons, lots of fun, and lots of effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Phonics And Digraphs
This week, we are working on beginning and ending digraphs! For each digraph, we do a circle chart, word sort, decodable text, dictation, and a decoding activity! After a week of Blends Bootcamp, my students had 80% mastery of digraphs!

This week, we’re also using our themed digital word-building tool and spelling words with digraphs using mitten letters!

We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with digraphs. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Three Billy Goats Gruff
This week we continue with our required curriculum by reading Three Billy Goats Gruff! This week we work on character traits, problem/solution, and we have some fun with a STEM project to build a bridge for the goats to cross! We also do a fun troll art project!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans For Math: Teen Numbers
This week, we start working with teen numbers. You know, twelve-teen, eleven-teen and five-teen! Our focus is getting the kids to understand that teen numbers are made up of ten and some more! Our most effective teen number lesson is our friend Rod and Cube!
We learn that the rod is ten and the cube is one. We then count on from ten to make a teen number. Students are also writing equations!

After this whole group lesson, we move to guided practice where the kids are working individually with my help and guidance! We use ten frames to make teen numbers as well as building teen numbers with plastic rods and cubes.

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Martin Luther King, Jr
This week we start learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We will continue learning about him and his work next week as well. We read books and watch videos to learn about his life and the work he was doing for equality.

We also start working on a collaborative art project using Martin’s big words. As we learn about Martin, we learn about the words he used, why he used the words and what they mean. We also talk about how those words apply to us and what we can do to bring those words to life. For our art project, we work togther to make a collage of his big words.

Kindergarten Science Lesson Plans: Penguins
This week is also PENGUIN week! Who doesn’t love a cute penguin waddling around?! Fun fact: our penguin research project was the very first research project I created and used with my students. It was so easy and successful that I decided to create research projects for all of our science and social studies content!
Here’s how we kick off our penguin unit using the Penguin Dance by Jack Hartmann!
Every research project starts with a schema map where we add our schema. As we learn about penguins, we add new learning and finally address our misconceptions.

We use read alouds and videos to learn about penguins. We use graphic organizers to record our learning so we can write about penguins. This week we do a can/have/are chart and label penguins!

Penguin Art Projects
Here are some of the art projects that we will do this week!

We also make penguin hats because every unit and theme needs a hat. Honestly, every day needs a hat!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Penguin Snack
Our Foodie Fun Friday snack this week is a penguin snack! We used a mini ice cream sandwich, Oreos, candy eyes, candy orange slices and a jelly bean!
