It’s week 2 of kindergarten, so we’re hoping to settle into some routines and procedures. This week is more academics (not necessarily required curriculum), but still mostly focused on routines and procedures! And it’s always an exciting week because we get to kick off ABC BOOTCAMP! Kindergarten Lesson Plans: ABC BOOTCAMP
The second week of kindergarten means we’re kicking off ABC BOOTCAMP! I love this because it means we’re establishing procedures and a consistent routine that quickly builds some independence. And it means we’re learning to read!
We’re using our TKS BOOTCAMP Kit this year! That means new hats, new books, and we get to incorporate embedded mnemonics into ABC BOOTCAMP! We will be using our Letter Sound Cards and our Mnemonic Alphabet resource. Here’s the plan for each day of ABC BOOTCAMP:
Introduce the sound and letter using the letter sound card.
Introduce the mnemonic character with the story.
Circle chart (explicit instruction connecting sounds to known words and objects)
Handwriting
Hats
This week is: M A T D O. Our hats are: mermaid/mustache, apple/astronaut, turtle/taco, dog/disco ball, and otter/ostrich. There is a cut-and-paste hat and an assembly-required hat. The kids will choose the hat they want to make.
We also do explicit handwriting instruction for each letter. After explicit modeling, students do independent practice as I support and guide.
First Week Of School Read Alouds
Using read-alouds the first week helps students with their feelings and emotions, helps them make connections to books, and is fun! Plus, you can use comprehension activities to introduce students to the curriculum and academic concepts in a fun way! Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: Names
This week, we focus on learning to recognize, write, and read our names! We read Your Name Is A Song and Chrysanthemum, and do name graphs, name writing, and we end the week with torn paper names!
This week we’re also going to read a classic book: Accidental Zucchini! Each kid will have a sticky note with their name on it. As we read the story, they will add their sticky note to the page that has the correct letter for their name!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Germs
Welcome back to school! You get a cold. You get a cold. Everyone in your house gets a cold! True story. Back to school means GERMS! So it’s the perfect time to teach kids about germs, handwashing, and staying healthy. I mean…let’s be honest…kindergarteners are germ factories snotting and sneezing and licking everything…hopefully a week of learning about germs will help!
This means we introduce schema maps to our class, as well as a can/have/are chart!
We do a healthy choices sort and then we explicitly learn how to wash our hands!
We also do a hands-on science experiment using Glo Germ Soap. The soap glows under a black light, so it helps the kids understand and see how germs spread! It also shows them that they don’t wash their hands well!
How To Use School Supplies
In our classroom, we let students establish the procedures and expectations for our school supplies. We create the graphic organizer, then we work on our cutting skills with our cut-apart puzzles! This week is all about scissors. All week. Learning to use scissors. Safely. Send help…it’s the 1 day of the year that stresses me out more than any other day of the year. Seriously. Scissor day is terrifying.
Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: Numbers And Counting
This week, we continue Number Bootcamp, exploring manipulatives and doing explicit work with numbers and counting!
We’re going to do some fun interactive math lessons, starting with How Many Of Us Are There! We draw a picture of ourselves and count how many of us there are!
Then we read Ten Pigs In The Bath and count pigs into a giant bathtub!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Brown Bear Brown Bear
This week we celebrate colors with Brown Bear Brown Bear! Each day, we celebrate a color and encourage the kids to wear that color! We read the story and retell it by coloring the animals, we sequence the story, and graph our favorite color!
