Week 9 is here, and it’s a 4-day week for us! We’re working on kindergarten subtraction activities, bats, great read-alouds, and lots of phonemic awareness! This week, we’re learning to subtract with hands-on activities, continuing Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp, and having some spooky-season fun with bats. We’re also reading Rap a Tap Tap and Room on the Broom and using those books for engaging literacy activities. Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: ABC BOOTCAMP And Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
We wrapped up ABC BOOTCAMP, so this week is another review week of all letters and sounds, with a major focus on identifying sounds, letter formation, and identifying onset sounds. To help with this, we’re using Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp and targeting sounds the kids are missing the most.

One of the activities we will do this week is to show a picture and have students identify the sound and write the sound!

We’re also going to do the Monster Mash! The kids pull a letter from the monster bag and say the sound, spell the sound and write the letter!

Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp focuses on the sounds using concrete images. This helps kids isolate the beginning sound. We chose the sounds this week based on our data and what sounds the kids were missing the most.

Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
This week, our curriculum switches us to the story Rap A Tap Tap! It’s actually one of the few things I like about our curriculum! I had never read this book until we adopted this curriculum, and it became a favorite. This week, we’re doing a notice, story map, and evidence organizer! We’re also strapping on our tap shoes and doing some tap dancing.

Bat Activities For Kindergarten

We’re finishing up our Bat unit this week. And let me tell you…I love how impactful these units are. Not only are we building necessary background knowledge and vocabulary, but to see how engaged some of my less engaged learners are is so powerful. I have a kid who doesn’t participate a lot and struggles with listening. He has been the most engaged kid all week. And we’ve learned so much about bats. This week our bats activities are: life cycle of a bat, a true false sort and completing our schema map.

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Adding And Subtracting
This week, we continue our” join and separate” unit in math. Our required curriculum calls it join and separate. We call it add and subtract. This unit focuses on the ideas of putting together (joining) and taking away (separating). We don’t use symbols yet, but focus on concrete activities to teach the concepts. Our curriculum lessons are all about animals, BUT they’re only slide-based activities with little practice. We don’t use slides, so we make it all hands-on and interactive.

This week is mostly a review week and a practice week so we’re definitely focusing on subtraction since it’s the hardest for the kids. We’re going to do more cereal subtraction and some fun “get off my broom” game to go along with our Room On The Broom Day celebration!
For subtraction, the curriculum uses mice eating cookies! So instead of looking at slides, we use Cookie Crisp cereal!

Kindergarten Halloween Activities: Room On The Broom
Our team has decided that each Friday of the week is going to be a fun day so we choose a book for that day and turn the day into a theme day around that book. This week we chose Room On The Broom!

We’re going to sequence the story, graph about witches, and draw a witch!

And of course, we’re making hats!

Foodie Fun Friday/Thursday: Room On The Broom Snack
This week’s Foodie Fun Friday snack is happening on Thursday since we don’t have kids on Friday. And it’s a theme day, so the snack is a witch’s hat made with a Fudge Stripe cookie, a Hershey Kiss, and a broom made with pretzel sticks and a miniature Reese cup!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
This week, we wrap up our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activities with questions and answers, a letters/numbers/words sort, five senses, and my favorite: acting out the story!

We do the required Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activities from the curriculum, but we also do a lot of extra fun things with the book. Because…well..it’s Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

We continue our fluency activity all week long. I make a chart that says “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, will there be enough room? Here comes…. Up the coconut tree!” When we get to “here comes” I put a sticky note on the chart to practice letters and sounds!

We’re doing our sort and five senses activities also!

And of course, we end our Chicka Chicka week with an acting out of the story. I dress up as a coconut tree. I put letter stickers in a container. Kids choose a letter, identify the sound, and put the letter on the tree!

Bat Activities For Kindergarten

This week, we’re kicking off spooky season with bats! This week, we start with a schema map, do a can/have/are chart, and label a bat!

And we do a directed drawing of a bat!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Adding And Subtracting
This week, we start our next unit in math. Our required curriculum calls it join and separate. We call it add and subtract. Our curriculum lessons are all about animals, BUT they’re only slide-based activities with little practice. We don’t use slides, so we make it all hands-on and interactive.

We’re starting with adding ducks in a pond, then adding ducks with a ten-frame, and story problems of animals going into the barn.

For subtraction, the curriculum uses mice eating cookies! So instead of looking at slides, we use Cookie Crisp cereal!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Hands-On Science Experiment
This week, we’re kicking off Mad Science Thursday with our first experiment of the year: Magic Potion!

Foodie Fun Friday: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Snack
This week’s Foodie Fun Friday snack is a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom snack! We use chocolate pudding, Whoppers, graham crackers, taffy and those fancy cookie sticks!
