It’s week 6 of kindergarten, and we’re continuing to build center routines and celebrating National Pirate Day! This week is still focused on routines and procedures as well. But mostly, our kindergarten lesson plans and activities are ABC BOOTCAMP, comparing numbers, apple activities and Pirate Day!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: ABC BOOTCAMP
We’re continuing ABC BOOTCAMP this week, BUT we’re doing a pivot. For many years, we have followed the order of our curriculum, but it’s a very strange order that makes no sense. We were in our planning meeting with coaches and admin when we started discussing this, and our admin told us to change it to make it best for the kids. TRUTH. (This is one reason I chose this school. We do what’s BEST FOR KIDS!) So this week we’re doing: BFGHR.
We’re using our TKS BOOTCAMP Kit this year! That means new hats, new books, and we get to incorporate embedded mnemonics into ABC BOOTCAMP! We will be using our Letter Sound Cards and our Mnemonic Alphabet resource. Here’s the plan for each day of ABC BOOTCAMP:
Introduce the sound and letter using the letter sound card.
Introduce the mnemonic character with the story.
Circle chart (explicit instruction connecting sounds to known words and objects)
Handwriting
Hats
Our hats are: yogurt/yak, fox/t-rex, jeep/jester, woodpecker/waffle, and volcano/vampire. There is a cut-and-paste hat and an assembly-required hat. The kids will choose the hat they want to make.
We also do explicit handwriting instruction for each letter. After explicit modeling, students do independent practice as I support and guide.
Kindergarten Lesson Plans And Activities: Five Senses Activities-Last Stop On Market Street
This week we continue with our required reading curriculum. The first module is the five senses. So we’re teaching the language and skill of the curriculum, but using our resources to make it more kid-friendly and appropriate.
This week, we’re continuing with Last Stop On Market Place! We’re working on details, text evidence, retelling, and making a graffiti wall.
Apple Activities
This week, we’re starting our apple unit with two weeks of apple activities culminating with an apple party to celebrate Johnny Appleseed! We start with a schema map to activate our background knowledge, we do a can/have/are chart, label parts of an apple and learn the life cycle of an apple!
We also do apple prints and make a torn paper apple!
And we will be starting our first monthly phonics project with our Apple Phonics Project. This month, we will do Letters and Sounds. This will make a cute door and hallway display!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Comparing Numbers
This week, we start our Comparing Numbers unit. This unit focuses on the language of more, less, and same. We are not using symbols yet.
This week, we’re comparing goldfish by putting handfuls of goldfish into bowls and seeing which has more or fewer. We’re going to the post office, discussing which envelope has more stamps, comparing stickers, and building towers, comparing them.
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Pirate Day
National Pirate Day is September 19th, and since that is a Saturday this year, we’re celebrating on Friday! We celebrate with a read-aloud, art project, snack, hat, and some fun phonics and math games!
