Ok, she may not be a wonder hamster, but she’s cute as could be!

At the beginning of last year, I applied for and received a Pets In The Classroom grant.  Me and the fiancee’ went to PetSmart to pick out a pet.  I asked the lady for help and she was showing me what I could get and then she told me that PetSmart had hamsters available for adoption for free!  FREE!  I said oh that would be great.  Teachers love free stuff, even free classroom pets!  As we were going to see them, she informed me that she had a brother and sister hamster and I thought two hamsters was great!  However, the brother only has three legs.  A THREE LEGGED HAMSTER?!?!  Are you kidding me?!  Sign me up.  I’ll take him.  Pinky and Curly came to live with us and we had a lot of great discussions based on Curly and his three legs.  He was a powerful powerful teacher when it came to never giving up, being different and accepting those who are different.  When a child would want to give up or would get frustrated we would also talk abut Curly climbing to the very top of his cage even though he had 3 legs.  And if he fell, he would start over.  Curly never give up and neither do Mr. Smedley’s friends!  Sadly, Curly went to the big hamster wheel in the sky which provided us with yet another powerful teaching moment.  Pinky is still running in her wheel at home with us for the summer.  She is now friends with Baby Butters who likes to lick her through her cage and chase her in her ball.
