I. AM. EXHAUSTED. 12 hour days are rough. Especially after a wedding and honeymoon! My good blogger friend Jennifer was so kind to send me a guest post to use for my honeymoon and in all of the wedding madness I totally forgot to post it. I am so sorry Jennifer. I’m just lame.
So here it is…read it, and go visit Jennifer and show her lots of love!!!!! I am the newlywed so you have to!
Hello all! I am thrilled to be guest posting for Greg today while he’s away enjoying his honeymoon! My name is Jennifer and my blog is Herding Kats In Kindergarten. I’m teaching first grade this year, but my heart belongs to kindergarten!
When Greg asked me to guest blog, I started trying to come up with a topic. Then I remembered an idea I had at the beginning of the year, after giving my sweeties their math assessments. One portion of the test looks like this:
and students have to name the shapes. The first few kiddos I tested did very well, but then I got to one little darling who named the shapes as: “Reftangle, oxen and square thingy”. That was my first hint that I might need to be adding some shape activities to our daily calendar time asap!
Thus, today’s post is all about shapes!
Here is one of my absolute favorite triangle songs:
You also can’t turn down James Blunt singing about triangles!
These videos work very well for my musical learners, but I have some very active little guys who need something more hands on. Therefore my Suzie Snakes are coming out of the box! I went to Hobby Lobby 2 years ago and bought several yards of very soft rope. I cut it into 18 inch lengths, tied a knot on one end as the head and now we use them to create snake shapes on the carpet!
Of course, what would a Smedley’s Smorgasboard post be without a craftivity or two?! here are some fun finds from Pinterest of easy crafts to help reinforce shapes.
You could also get the book “Mouse Shapes” and create this fun little mouse craft.
I’ve also created a few activities for teaching shapes! Here’s a fun Read and Write the Room with 2d Shapes freebie:
I hope you enjoyed these ideas! Please stop by my blog, Herding Kats in Kindergarten and say hello!
