“…Happiness is as simple a pot of stone soup..”

Hello Thanksgiving break!!!  3 days with no children.  I will take it!

Today we read one of my favorite books (have you noticed that they’re all my favorites?!  I think I have an issue!) Stone Soup!  I love the message in this story.  It’s a powerful message that we can’t accompolish much without the help of others.  I love the implications that this lesson has in our classroom.  I love that my friends came away with the lessons that we have to help each other, we have to be friends and most importantly we have to share.  And that happiness is as simple as a pot of stone soup!

To illustrate the powerful lesson of this story, I ask every child to bring in a can of vegetables.  We add our 3 stones and then each child gets to add their vegetables.  I provide chicken noodle soup (for extra flavor!)  And then we cook our soup.  When our soup is ready we wait with bated breath to see who gets the stones.  I always make sure to give  Randomly,  the stones to students who are leaders and students who can use the extra boost.  The best part:  we cheer when a friend finds the stone!!!    And then we feast on our soup!!  Such a great way to celebrate thanksgiving!

As we celebrated today, a quote from the story struck me.
“…sharing makes us all richer.”
I am so thankful to have found an amazing community of bloggers, teachers, and friends that share their lives with me daily.  Because of each of you, I am richer than I could have possibly imagined.  Because of your generosity, you have created a pot of stone soup within my classroom with your products, ideas, tips and inspirations.
“…happiness is as simple as a pot of stone soup!”
What are you thankful for?
Today we wrote about what we are thankful for and my friend shared this.  She is thankful for her daddy.  That is daddy in jail.  And the police officer.  Despite the horrible circumstances, she is still thankful for her daddy.  POWERFUL!

I recently won a give away at Innovative Connections and my prize arrived today!!!!  I am the proud owner of a Paper Monster Laminator and a ton of pouches!!!  Thank you Innovative Connections and Mybinding.com!
Even Butters, the CEO of The Kindergarten Smorgasboard, approves!
Innovative Connections
And who isn’t thankful for Mr. Greg in a silly hat!  We made pilgrim hats for our stone soup feast!
And here’s our mini-crisis.  We.  Ran.  Out.  Of.  Sentence.  Strips.  Um, hello school supply companies, you need to stock us up.  You provide us with sentence strips and we will show the world how sentence strips make amazing learning tools….HATS!
This is what I just created for my monsters!!  So excited to use this!  130 pages of Christmas fun!
And my kids have become obsessed with measuring things, so I am working on this unit for them.  If they want to measure, I will make sure they have the resources to measure!  Measure away monsters, measure away!
