Howdy ya’ll! It’s Sunday! That means it’s time for your favorite event of the week! Lesson planning and the kindergarten smorgasboard of ideas that is Schedulin Sunday! Well, since some of you are off all week (ANGRY ARMS AT YOU! OK, not so much angry arms, but jealous arms!) and we only have a two day week, this is a short Schedulin Sunday!
And I don’t want you to be disappointed with a short post, so I will share a “Only in Nashville” story with ya! We had date night last night to see the new movie “Lincoln” which is a great movie. If only we had more leaders like Mr. Lincoln. As we’re standing outside the theater there in front us is Faith Hill and Tim McGraw! True story. They are going to be in our theater !!! The Mr. doubted that it was Faith Hill but once Tim came back from getting popcorn, he knew I was right. We stalked them ended up sitting right beside them. Faith was smiling at us and spoke to us a few times. Tim was a little more “paranoid” of being recognized ..but Faith was slurping her coke, munching her popcorn and enjoying the movie. And then to the right of us was our own Congressman Jim Cooper! We were surrounded by celebs! The Mr. wanted to yell out “OMG Tim McGraw! OMG Jim Cooper! OMG Faith Hill! It’s too much!” and then fake a faint! But he controlled himself! The cool thing about Nashville is that very few people recognized any of these people and if they did, no one said a word or made a scene. Welcome to Music City!
Monday
We are going to be having a little down time! And by that I mean I have stuff planned but we’re going to be doing all Thanksgiving all day! We will be using the activities from the unit I created for my monsters! It has beginning sounds, numbers and counting and good ole fun! It even has roll and color games where the monsters have to find the TEN FRAME to match the number and then color! Does anyone else have students who love ten frames?! Mine think they are the best!
We will also be writing about what we are thankful for and doing our annual “I Am Thankful For The Words I Can Read” project! I use this as a sight word assessment and a great way to spend some time making cute turkeys!
This is a model one of my monsters did for me on Friday! The students get only feathers with the words they know! And we celebrate all of our words we know because every word we learn makes us a better reader! This is very motivating for my monsters every year! And it’s a fun way to assess sight words and make a super cute bulletin board. Cute…assessing…sight words…art…academics….look at the kindergarten smorgasboard covering all the bases! We will also enjoy the story 10 Fat Turkeys and we will be making turkey headbands! Because no week in the kindergarten smorgasbord world is complete without a silly hat! Thank you to my friends at Time 4 Kindergarten for the turkey headband! Be sure to go check them out and tell them Greg sent ya!
We also did some measuring on Friday using our turkey rulers! Was super fun and we learned about how to line up our ruler to get an accurate measurement!
Tuesday
Today we celebrate our bonds of friendship and love as a monster family. This is one of my more favorite moments in my classroom each year. Every child (if they can!) will bring in 1 can of vegetables. (Two stories: Inevitably I always get a bag of frozen peas (yuck!) and last year a little boy who was my favorite adorable came in and said his backpack was soooo heavy and he just couldn’t carry it. I asked why and he tells me it’s because of the vegetables he has. I was like, really, it’s just a can of peas or corn. He proceeds to open his backpack and pull out one of the GIANT size cans of green beans You know the size that’s for feeding a small army?! Yep. ) We read the book Stone Soup and create a flow map to retell the story. Then we spend a lot of time discussing how the people in the story didn’t talk and weren’t friendly and helpful to each other. We talk about how that might make us feel if that happened in our classroom. And then we talk about how when they came together as friends and helped each other create a beautiful and delicious feast. This always leads us to a great conversation about how being friends and family and loving and helpful in our classroom creates our beautiful learning and helps us become great readers and writers! It’s a perfect way to prepare your mind and heart for a day of thanksgiving.
