Happy Monday!!!  Why am I always most exhausted on Monday?!

I normally wait until Saturday to show off what we did in class during the week but today’s activity was such a huge success that I have to share it NOW!

This weekend while lesson planning, I was scouring Pinterest for a fun ten frame/counting activity.  I ran across a pin for a living ten frame.  The pin directed me to Chalk Talk and their idea for living ten frames.  As soon as I saw the idea I knew that would be my Monday math kick off!

I used mustache (DUH!) duct tape to tape off a ten frame on our classroom floor.  I kept it under the rug until math time.  We talked about ten frames, what they were used for, how they helped us and then we talked about using our math counters on our ten frames.  Then I ripped back the carpet and they were in awe.  I asked what counters we had that were big enough and they couldn’t figure it out.  I told them that we were going to use ourselves as the counters!  Hello engaged and excited!

Our living ten frame taped on the floor.  And our little ‘staches as counters!
The students lined up in a semi-circle around the ten frame.  I started on one end of the line and the ‘staches took turns going to the ten frame.  The other students were so excited and engaged as they stood their and counted!
I projected a number onto the screen.  We identified the number and then built our number.  We worked really hard to count only when the person was in the ten frame box.  We didn’t count while they walked.  We waited until they got into the box to count them.  I was so impressed at how this activity really helped them to slow down their counting.  Not only were we making numbers but this really helped the ‘staches with their one to one correspondence!

After we built the number I would ask for a volunteer to count the students and identify the number.  This allowed for me to see how well individual students were doing with counting!
This lesson was such a success and a great engaging way to meet some common core standards!!!  I will definitely be doing this more and adding another ten frame to practice numbers into the teens!!
Thoughts?  Will you try it??
