Monkey Subtraction Lesson And Freebie!

Howdy!  Don’t you love when you cobble up a lesson that really helps your students “get it” and then you have an Oprah moment…you know, an AHA moment!  Think… “YOU GET SUBTRACTION!”  “YOU GET SUBTRACTION!”   “EVERYBODY GETS SUBTRACTION!”

So, we started working on subtraction this week.  This is one of those skills that my class has always struggled with.  Our introduction yesterday went smoothly but we were definitely still struggling with the concept of “taking away!”   So I was hopeful that today’s lesson would knock it out of the park and it really did (Why couldn’t I have been observed today?!)

First of all…I give all the credit for this lesson to Mrs. Ricca at Mrs. Ricca’s kindergarten.  I found this activity on her blog last year.  I love the music/literature/math tie in, the fun and the hands on practice the lesson provides.    And I love that we can use our Velcro Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree for another lesson!

So, what is this Oprah-worthy lesson?!  It’s Subtracting Monkeys!

We reviewed subtraction means taking away.  I printed off these monkeys and attached Velcro to the back of them.  Each ‘stache took a turn.
They choose how many monkeys they wanted on the tree (up to 5).  We wrote that number on our anchor chart.  Then we wrote the minus sign and each time, we reviewed what minus meant.  Then the ‘stache removed (take away!) some monkeys from the tree.
We wrote that number in our equation.  Then we wrote the equals sign and counted the monkeys left on the tree.  And finally we wrote the answer and read our equation.
Finally, each stache did their own subtraction practice.  They colored monkeys, glued some on the tree and some that fell off the tree and wrote their subtraction equation!
BAM!  The light bulb is burning brighter for sure!
A HUGE THANK YOU TO MRS. RICCA FOR THIS FANTASTIC LESSON and idea.
So, then Mr. Greg got to wondering.  How can I extend this lesson into centers?!  So I came up with this little freebie!  I can’t wait to print this tonight and put it into math centers tomorrow!!!
It’s a simple subtraction center that follows the same model as today’s lesson…only it’s done independently!
