Morning Literacy Routine! – Smorgievision

Happy Tuesday!  I hope everyone had a terrific Tuesday!

Today I want to share another classroom video with you!  Ya’ll asked for them, so you’re going to get a lot of them!  This one is about 30 minutes long and shows two days of our morning literacy routine.

Here is our literacy routine:  (After our morning meeting, we sing a couple of songs and then move directly into our literacy routine!)

Changing Names-We change the first sound of our first name to the sound of the day.  For example, on Monday everyone changes their name to the /m/ sound.  Some examples:  Alex becomes Malex, Paydon becomes Maydon, etc.  This is great for phonemic awareness.  And really, it’s fun and makes us giggle.

After we change our names, we do our blends chart.  At this point in the year, we are working on our blends.  Prior to this, it would be letters and sounds.  The routine is the same for both.

After our blends, we read a poem and an emergent reader.

Next is sight words.  Our sight word routine can be found HERE!  You can click here to see a post on our literacy routine!

And finally we work on sounds, blending, segmenting, vowels and other phonics skills.  What you will see in this video is day one and two of our week.  We make a circle map for our letter/sound review.  We learn all of our letters and sounds by October so from then on, we do a circle map each week to review a letter and sound.  On day one, we review the sound and brainstorm words for that sound.  Mr. Greg draws (or makes chicken scratch pictures) of the words.  Day two we spell the words and count the syllables.  No it’s not letter of the week…it’s just a review of previously learned sounds!

And then we move on to our story and comprehension.  This routine take 15-30 minutes depending on the day and how well we read and transition.

And yes you will see a few off task and behavior issues.  People, this is real life!

Enjoy the video and leave comments with any questions!
