Raise your hand if you love unicorns! I mean, who doesn’t?! They’re fun and happy and make everything better. I love using unicorns in the classroom because the kids love them! And did you know that National Unicorn Day is celebrated on April 9? Here are some ideas for unicorns in the classroom…
Unicorn Literacy Ideas
For National Unicorn Day, we read Thelma The Unicorn and have some great discussions about the story elements and the importance of being you and being happy with who you are!
And we graph whether we like unicorns or no. And it’s unanimous.
We also have Read It Up! How To Catch A Unicorn! My class LOVES the “How To Catch” books so we have been adding them all to our classroom library!

Unicorn Math Ideas
We found these unicorn cut outs at Dollar Tree so we’re using them a lot.
For this counting game, we just write numbers on the cutouts and the students use mini-erasers from Target to practice counting and one to one correspondence.
This rainbows and unicorns counting game uses an inflatable rainbow drink holder, pom-poms and number cards.

Students choose a card, say the number and count the pom-poms into the cup. You can add tweezers or tongs to add in fine motor practice.
Giant unicorn ten frames! For this we made our giant ten frames with construction paper. We used our unicorn number cards and felt unicorns. Studetns choose a number card and make the ten frame.

Adding unicorns! These unicorns are from Target and are usually out during Valentine’s Day. I found the unicorn dice at a kiosk in the mall. The kids roll two dice. They put the correct numbers of unicorns in the cup. Then they dump the cups out to add. They can write the equation on their paper. This is a very concrete lesson for the idea of putting together. And this would make a great small group game!
Unicorn letter matching! Write uppercase and lowercase letters on the cutouts. Match the letters.
Another option is to match the letters and color the letters on the recording sheet. Or you can use one set of cards, choose a card, and color the letter for a simple letter recognition activity. The recording sheet is in our Unicorn Centers For The Entire Year.
Unicorn Art
This unicorn painting is one of my favorites because it uses their feet! Paint the feet white. Then add a rainbow mane, a golden horn and glitter!
YES! PAINT THEIR FEET! It’s hilarious. And it’s a great bonding experience.
Unicorn slime!
We made three colors of slime and mixed them together to make unicorn slime. You can find our slime recipe in our Mad Science Creation which is linked at the end of this post.
We also made unicorn slime by following our slime recipe and adding in unicorn confetti!

Unicorn Sensory Bin!
We found these sparkly balls and string at a craft store during Christmas. We added cards from our Unicorn Centers For The Entire Year resource to make a differentiated sensory bin.
Unicorn Snack Ideas
Unicorn Bark! This is a great snack for National Unicorn Day! To make this you melt white chocolate and add food coloring. Swirl. Add sprinkles. Let harden. Break into pieces!
This unicorn snack was made with Unicorn Pudding, marshmallows (gelatin-free), whipped cream, and rainbow sprinkles!
And of course, no unicorn post is complete without unicorn decorations…
The giant pinata was hand-made by the mom of one of my students! Ya’ll. HAND. MADE. It was a gift for our class. And no, we did not bust it. The unicorn inflatable is from Oriental Trading. The image on the smart board is from Google.
And yes, you dress for the occasion. My unicorn shirt is from Kickee. The slippers were a gift from a friend.
We have used the giant rainbow sprinkler in our classroom numerous times. And giant unicorn sprinkler is a classroom must-have!

And you need a unicorn costume…yes. It’s an inflatable unicorn costume. And yes I wore it for school picture day.
