Schedulin Sunday: Frogs, Vowel Teams, Measurement And Dragons Love Tacos

This week we’re continuing Backwards Bootcamp, starting Vowel Teams Bootcamp, working on measurement, starting our Frogs Research Project, and celebrating Cinco de Mayo! Ya’ll it’s a PACKED week! It’s also a four-day week for us!

Note: This year, my goal is to show you that you can use our TKS resources along with required curriculums and continue to have fun, so you’ll see that happening throughout the school year!

Vowel Teams BOOTCAMP

This week we will be starting our Vowel Teams Bootcamp with OO words!

We will also be using our CVC-E decoding cards for extra practice! We start with a circle chart! Did you know that the science of reading tells us that attaching words and phonics skills to known objects helps us learn the words? That’s one of the things that makes our TKS BOOTCAMP curriculum effective. Students can attach the phonics skills to known objects. And because the kids are coming up with the words, we’re activating their affective learning!

We will work on word blending and writing words as well and of course, we will use our decodable texts to practice OO words in context!

For small groups, we use our Vowel Teams Blending Cards!

Our final activity and sort of an informal assessment for OO words is creating our Spoon Words Chart! I write OO words on spoons. Students choose a spoon, read the word and then I hot glue the spoon on our chart!

And yes, Vowel Bootcamp and the entire TKS BOOTCAMP curriculum are aligned to the science of reading. And it has been from day 1 because that’s how I was taught to teach reading so it’s what I’ve always done!

Sight Word 60!

This week we are continuing Sight Word 60! After spending the summer learning more about the science of reading, we are continuing with Sight Word 60. We have always had decoding and encoding (writing) of the words as part of Sight Word 60 so we will continue that and will increase the amount of decoding and writing. We will also use orthographic mapping and we’re changing our order of sight words to align to the 109 most frequent words (even though we do 100 words…). You can learn all the details of how Sight Word 60 works on the linked blog post and you can get everything you need for Sight Word 60 in our Sight Word 60 creation!

Explore It Up-Then And Now

As part of our required reading curriculum, we’re studying America Then And Now. This week we continue to focus on transportation and communication. We’re going to read about communication and do a notice and wonder chart. We will also read Ben And Now and discuss the main idea and details!

This is an example of our notice and wonder chart:

Frogs Research Project

I was SO excited to start a brand new research project! We have never done a frogs unit so I am pumped! We will do a schema map, can/have/are chart, and label a frog! I am also excited because we will have real live frogs!

Froggy's Lair

We got our frogs and the biosphere from Froggy’s Lair! I cannot wait for the kids to see our frogs! Definitely check out Froggy’s Lair!

We will also be using our Froggy and Kangaroo centers!

We will also make a torn paper frog! We use a paper plate and the kids cover the plate with green paper. They add eyes and a tongue!

Math-Measurement

This week we’re going to work on measurement with some fun hands-on activities using our Math It Up: Measurement resource!

First, we talk about measurement and the students share what they think measurement is and how we can measure!

We also sort paper by size! I use this a pre-assessment tool to see if we understand size and height!

Day 2 we read the book Measuring Penny and then we measure objects using DOG BISCUITS!

Day 3 we measure our friends using rolls of receipt paper!

Day 4 we use a balance to compare the weights of objects. Students predict which one is heavier and then we place the objects into the balance to weight the two objects.

Read It Up: Dragons Love Tacos

This week we are also reading Dragons Love Tacos and making tacos! We will work on retelling using sequence words and orally retelling using a retell chart!

We also do a directed drawing of a dragon!

Morning Meeting Greeting

This week our morning meeting greeting is duck duck goose! A student walks around the circle, chooses a friend and they race around the circle going in opposite directions. When they meet, they greet each other!

Backwards Bootcamp

This week we continue our Backwards Bootcamp. I cannot believe we’re at the end of the year. And we’re celebrating the last 26 days of school. This ridiculously challenging year is almost over…and man, we teachers have done amazing things! This week our Backwards Bootcamp activities are:
