Schedulin Sunday: Tacky The Penguin, Making Numbers And Blends Bootcamp

This week is a short week so it’s going to be busy! We’re continuing with Blends Bootcamp and composing and decomposing numbers. We’re going to be talking about MLK and reading Three Billy Goats Gruff and Tacky The Penguin!

Phonics And Phonemic Awareness: Blends Bootcamp

We are following our required foundational skills curriculum. And we are supplementing with our TKS BOOTCAMP Blends Bootcamp! Our foundational skills curriculum really starts to focus on segmenting, word chaining and blending, and writing words using blends and digraphs. This is exactly what we do with our science of reading-aligned Blends Bootcamp! Each week we do two blends. Day 1 is a circle chart that includes segmenting sounds, spelling words, and blending words. Day 2 is word building and writing which is more segmenting, more spelling, and more blending with a focus on writing the words so we’re mapping the sound to the spelling.

We also use our decodable texts in small groups to work on the skills in text.

Reading Comprehension-Tacky The Penguin

This week we’re using our newest Read It Up! creation to have some fun with penguins! We’re reading Tacky The Penguin! We’re going to do a story map and focus on text evidence. We’re also going to be talking a lot about the importance of being yourself!

We’re also going to do some fun penguin art projects! First, you can’t read a penguin book without a penguin hat! So we make a penguin hat! (and yes I’m wearing a penguin shirt!) The hat is basically a half circle with eyes and a beak and then glued onto a sentence strip!

We will also make our symmetrical penguins! Students do most of the work with some help from me. We fold the paper, squirt the paint on half of the paper, and close the paper. Rub the paper and open it to see your penguin!

READ IT UP! Three Billy Goats Gruff

This week we are using our required reading curriculum by reading the books Little Red Hen and Three Billy Goats Gruff. and working on story elements with a story map, and identifying problems and solutions. We supplement with our Read It Up! resource. We are required to do 3 lessons a week so that’s what we do. We focus on the “learn” section of each lesson and use our research project to scaffold and support student learning!

Math

This year our district is using Illustrative Math as our math curriculum. We will be completing those lessons and supplementing them heavily with our Math It Up! creations. This week we’re continuing to work on decomposing and composing numbers. We will be using our Math It Up! Number Bonds resource to supplement our curriculum. (NOTE: I am adding additional activities to this resource! Stay tuned for the updates!)

This week we will be focused on making numbers by using cubes! We will be doing lots of building towers, breaking towers and coloring towers!

Tuesday-build towers, break them apart, color the cubes and write the equation/expression

Wednesday-build towers for a number and show the different ways to make the towers, color the cubes

Thursday-story problems-tell a story, students solve by building towers, writing equations

Martin Luther King

This week we will also be discussing MLK and learning about how he changed the world. Our focus is to learn about him and his work and discuss ways we can continue to fight for justice and equality.
