Phonics And Phonemic Awareness: Blends Bootcamp
We are following our required foundational skills curriculum. And we are supplementing with our TKS BOOTCAMP Blends Bootcamp! Our foundational skills curriculum really starts to focus on segmenting, word chaining and blending, and writing words using blends and digraphs. This is exactly what we do with our science of reading-aligned Blends Bootcamp! Each week we do two blends. Day 1 is a circle chart that includes segmenting sounds, spelling words, and blending words. Day 2 is word building and writing which is more segmenting, more spelling, and more blending with a focus on writing the words so we’re mapping the sound to the spelling.
We also use our decodable texts in small groups to work on the skills in text.
We’re also doing a lot of word chaining with CVC words and blends. Word chaining is when you change one sound to make new words. This phonics activity is one of the best for helping students blend and write words and understanding how words work. For these lessons, we’re using our Digital Word Building resource! This resource includes a PowerPoint file and a Google Slides file so it can be used on any device!
READ IT UP! Three Billy Goats Gruff
This week we are using our required reading curriculum by reading the book Three Billy Goats Gruff and working on describing words, problem/solution, and comparing and contrasting characters. We supplement with our Read It Up! resource. We are required to do 3 lessons a week so that’s what we do. We focus on the “learn” section of each lesson and use our research project to scaffold and support student learning!
We will also make our own troll!
This year our district is using Illustrative Math as our math curriculum. We will be completing those lessons and supplementing them heavily with our Math It Up! creations. This week we’re continuing to work on decomposing and composing numbers. We will be using our Math It Up! Number Bonds resource to supplement our curriculum.
This week we will use our giant number bond on the floor to understand different ways to make numbers.
We will also be using red and yellow counters to make numbers.
We’re also going to use counters to solve story problems and make numbers.
Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year begins on Sunday, January 22. If you would like to celebrate this global holiday in your classroom, we have some great ideas and resources for you! Our Lunar New Year Research Project is updated for 2023 and the year of the rabbit!
We will learn about the Year Of The Rabbit and record our learning. We will make Chinese lanterns to decorate our classroom and we will enjoy noodles and fortune cookies!
We will graph whether we like rice or not!

Foodie Fun Friday
This week our Foodie Fun Friday is our troll snack! We use graham crackers, green frosting, Veggie Straws, pretzels, candy eyes and M&Ms to make a troll!
Mad Scientist Thursday
This week our hands-on science lesson has us making snow slime! The directions are included in our Students Scientists resource!
And yes, you dress the part!
Greeting-shoe greeting-everyone places 1 shoe in the center of the circle. Choose a shoe, find the owner of the shoe and greet that person.
Activity-find the clothespin. We hide a clothespin on a child and we have to find it!
