Welcome to the birthday edition of Schedulin Sunday! Today is Mr. Greg’s birthday and it’s week 8 of kindergarten, and our kindergarten lessons and we have our weekly kindergarten lesson plans ready to go. This week is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom week, plus we’re wrapping up our Apples Research Project, adding and subtracting and reviewing sounds and letters!

Weekly Kindergarten Lessons: ABC BOOTCAMP
Last week, we completed ABC BOOTCAMP, so this week is all about reviewing our sounds and letters. This review week always happens after ABC BOOTCAMP and is a time to have some fun and play some games to practice sounds, letters, and letter formation!
Our first game is going to be a Spookley The Square Pumpkin-themed game! We got these adorable Spookley backpacks, so we’re making square pumpkins with letters written on them. Students will choose a pumpkin, identify the sound, and learn how to spell the sound. We will write the letter on whiteboards. Click the image to get the bags from Oriental Trading!
Our next game will be a fun game using a random toy I found at our house. Adelynn got this weird little piranha toy a few years ago (can’t remember where), and we use it to practice sounds and letters. The piranha moves around, and when he stops on a letter, we hear the sound of the letter and write it!
Kindergarten Lessons: Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
This week, we also continue Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp! Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp is all about hearing the sounds and the oral language. We start with sentences and work our day down to sounds in words, segmenting etc. This research-based resource is designed for each lesson to take about 10 minutes, and then we move to ABC BOOTCAMP, which has explicit phonics and combines sounds and letters. This week in Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp, we’re working on skill 3, which is hearing beginning sounds. This week we will be doing student circle charts focusing on the sounds we have struggled with in ABC BOOTCAMP: w, y, u, j and g.
Weekly Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Sight Words
This week, we’re continuing sight words in our classroom using our science of reading-aligned resource: Sight Word 60! And yes, you can still teach sight words as long as you teach students to decode, spell, write, and read the words in context! We’re not teaching them to memorize words anymore. We did our first week of Sight Word 60, and it went great! The kids did great and learned the words so quickly so I’m excited to see the continued growth!
Here’s the routine:
Monday: I will introduce the words by segmenting the sounds, decoding the words, spelling them, and using the word in a sentence.
Tuesday and Wednesday-review the words with segmenting and decoding the words; kids use the words in a sentence
Thursday-sight word: Students find and color the word!
Friday-we play a game to practice the words!
Weekly Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
This week, our required curriculum has us doing Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! FINALLY! When we first started using this district curriculum, it was frustrating to wait so long to read this classic book. But now we love that falls right at the end of ABC BOOTCAMP! It’s perfect for sounds and letters after ABC BOOTCAMP!
We kick off Chicka Chicka Boom Boom with a letter hunt! I hide letters around the classroom, and we find them! We say the sounds and letters! In the past, we’ve used our stuffed letters from AlphaPals for this activity, but this year, we’re using our new Everything Blocks!
Click the image to order some Everything Blocks, and use the code SMORGIE to save 20%!
We work on comprehension skills such as questions and answers, what we see and hear, and the essential meaning of the story.
We also do a sort of words, letters and numbers!
The kids build fluency using our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom fluency chart! And we read the chart, and I add letters to the chart. The repetition builds fluency and we’re working on sounds and letters. We also add names for a fun name-recognition activity!
We wrap up the week by turning Mr. Greg into a coconut tree! Students choose a letter, we identify the sound and letter and they stick the letter on the coconut tree!
Weekly Kindergarten Lessons: Apples
This week we’re wrapping up our apples unit using our Apples Research Project!
This week, we’re studying the life cycle of apples and doing a true-false sort to see how much we’ve learned about apples! We also revisit our schema map, add new learning, and address any misconceptions!
We also read The Seasons Of Arnold’s Apple Tree to discuss the life cycle of apples and we graph whether we like apples!
And of course we make apple prints!
Weekly Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Addition And Subtraction
This week, we’re working on addition, and we’ll start subtraction. True story. It’s actually been this way for many years in our district, and it works very well. This first introduction is very concrete and introduces the skill as “join and separate.” We talk about 1 and 2 is 3, etc. We talk about having 3 and taking away 1, and we have 2 left.
The curriculum uses ducks as a way to introduce the skills so we’re using our Math It Up! Adding Ducks resource!
Yes, we use this giant inflatable duck for our lessons. The kids get on the duck to practice “joining!” We talk about how to add, which means join or put together, and we count on finding the answer.
This week, we will also add ten frames.
For subtraction, we’re using Cookie Crisp cereal and bowling! I tell students to put cereal on their plates, and then I tell them to take some away.
We also go bowling. We count how many pins are standing and how many fall down and count to find the answer.
Kindergarten Lessons: Morning Meeting
This week, our greeting will be an apple greeting! I put the kids name and picture on apples and put them in our tree stump bucket. We take turns grabbing an apple and greeting our friends! The bucket is from the Target Dollar Spot!
We are using the apples from our Disco Ball themed clipart set!
Mad Science Thursday
Our Mad Science Thursday is coconut science. We will use our five senses to describe a coconut, and we test whether a coconut can sink or float!
FOODIE FUN FRIDAY
Our Foodie Fun Friday is an apple party! We get to try different apple foods and graph our favorite!
