In kindergarten, decomposing numbers to 10 allows kids to understand how numbers are made in different ways. It also helps students with place value, addition, and writing equations! Plus, who doesn’t like “ripping things apart”?!
Kindergarten Decomposing Numbers: Number Bonds
Our favorite lesson introduces number bonds in a giant way. Literally, Use a permanent marker to draw a giant number bond on the floor!
We use the students to decompose numbers! Check out this video!
Kindergarten Decomposing Numbers: Independent Practice With Number Bonds
After our introductory lesson, we used our big number bonds for independent practice by decomposing numbers and number bonds!

Kindergarten Decomposing Numbers: Making Numbers And Writing Equations
We also focus on decomposing each number so we can see all the ways to make that number. For these lessons, we’re also focusing on writing the equations. We spend two days on each number. Day 1 is the whole group, where we use ducks, cupcakes, etc, in two different colors to show ways to make a number.
Day 2 is shake-and-spill using two-sided counters and domino worksheets. The students spill the counters and sort them. On the decomposing number worksheet, they draw the dots and write the equation.
We also build a tower and WRECK IT! After we wreck it, we color the cubes, make the number bond, and write the equation! For our culminating activity students to show their understanding of the concept!
All of these lessons and more are included in our Math It Up: Decomposing Numbers resource!
This resource is newly updated and now includes 15 days of lessons for decomposing numbers to 10!
