Week 28 of kindergarten is the kick-off to our last quarter of school. I can’t believe we are down to the last 9 weeks of the school year. Yeah, it’s exciting, but it’s also sad. This means our time together as a class is nearing its end, and it means we have a lot of learning to do and a lot of fun to have, so let’s get busy with these kindergarten March activities and March lesson plans!

March Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Phonics And Phonemic Awareness

This week, we’re moving on to CVC_E words in our phonics lessons. We have a great mastery of CVC words and digraphs, so it’s time to move on to our next skill! Just like all of our BOOTCAMP curriculum, we will have circle charts for explicit instruction, dictation, spelling, decoding, and lots of practice with vowels!
This week, we’re doing two cvc_e patterns: a_e and i_e. We will spend two days on each. Day 1 is the circle chart, and Day 2 is dictation, blending, and spelling. We’re also doing decodable text in whole group and small groups!

Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
For phonemic awareness, we’re still on skill 8 of our Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp. Skill 8 is oral blending. This week, we will continue with two very fun activities that my kids loved last week: Feed The Monster and Step It Up! These are included in Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp! Feed the Monster is me saying sounds, students blending the sounds, and finding the picture. They feed the picture to the monster. Race to the word is where students orally blend the sounds and race to find the correct picture!

We will be using our large letter cards to spell and blend cvc_e words!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: For Social Studies And Reading: Ben And Now
This week, we’re continuing our third module of our required reading curriculum.
This week, we’re reading the book Ben And Now. This book seems like it would be blah, but kids love it. It’s about Ben Franklin and his inventions. The cool thing is that Ben invented so many things that we use today. The kids love seeing all these inventions. This week, we’re comparing the inventions Ben made to the inventions today and how they still help us. Then we will write some information about Ben and his inventions!

Kindergarten March Activities: 3D Shapes
This week, we are learning about 3D shapes! We did 2D shapes a few weeks ago and now the curriculum has us doing 3D shapes. We’re going on shape hunts, sorting shapes and identifying shapes using attributes!

On day 1, the students will do a shape sort to serve as a baseline introduction. On day 2, we will do a whole group shape sort to explicitly learn the 3D shapes and their attributes. Each day, we will create a circle chart for a 3D shape, and finally, we go on a shape hunt around the classroom and create our 3D shapes anchor chart.

For our shape hunt, students find objects in the classroom that are 3D shapes. They present the shape to the class, identify it by name, and discuss its attributes. Then, I send a message home to families and encourage them to find 3D shapes at home and send me pictures!

Kindergarten March Activities: St. Patrick’s Day
We are never in school for St. Patrick’s Day! But this year, we will be basically celebrating all day. Leprechaun phonics? Yep. Leprechaun read aloud? Yep. Leprechaun snacks? Yep. Rainbow hats? Yep.
For our leprechaun phonics, I’m making a black pot on posterboard and coins with letters. I will say a word, and students will spell the word with the coins. The rest of the students will write the word on their whiteboards.
We will read How To Catch A Leprechaun and do a story map to retell the story.

And we have a stem challenge to see who can stack the tallest tower of gold coins!

We make St. Patrick’s Day hats!

The hats are included in this resource:

We’re going to measure how tall we are using shamrocks!

And we have a visit from the leprechaun. He trashes our room and uses our toilet but at least he’s nice enough to leave us some treats. Leprechaun chow and ingredients to make Shamrock Shakes! The labels and recipe for Leprechaun chow are linked in the St. Patrick’s Day blog post at the end of this post.

Kindergarten March Activities: Rainbows
March is when we study weather, and since St. Patrick’s Day is on a Monday, we figured this would be the perfect time to kick off our weather learning with rainbows and learn about the science behind rainbows!

For our rainbows research, we start with a schema map. We share our schema or background knowledge about rainbows. As we learn about rainbows, we add our new learning and address our misconceptions.

We use read alouds and videos to research and learn about rainbows. We do a can/have/need graphic organizer and label a rainbow!

Our rainbow art project will be to make a self portrait with rainbow hair!

Morning Meeting
This week our greeting is a rainbow greeting. Student pictures will appear from behind a rainbow.
Our activity is to pass a bunny! We bought some felt bunnies from Dollar Tree, so we’re going to use clothespins to pass the bunny!

Foodie Fun Friday: Rainbow Toast
Our Friday snack this week is rainbow toast. We haven’t made this snack in a while, so I’m excited to bring it back. I’m also excited to see how many kids actually eat it!
