Kindergarten Lesson Ideas: Phonics And Phonemic Awareness

This week, we’re on week three of Vowel Teams Bootcamp. Yes. I am doing vowel teams or vowel pairs with my kids. Why? Well, we’re ready. I don’t do this every year, but this is one of the years when my kids were ready, so we’re giving them access to even more of the code!
This week we move on to EE words! My kids should do well with this because we’ve been using this sound all year thanks to Secret Stories.
We will do a circle chart to segment, spell and blend the sounds to read the words.

Then we do JEEP WORDS! The words are written on Jeeps. We decode the words and glue the words into the Jeep!

We also get to put sheep in a Jeep! If you’re gonna do sheep in a Jeep, you have to put them in a Jeep. It’s a rule. This started when I owned a Jeep Wrangler, so hopefully someone at school will let me borrow their Jeep. Or we’re gonna be putting sheep in my VW bus! I write ee words on white balloons. We decode the words and put them in the Jeep!

Kindergarten Resources: Sheep In A Jeep
This week, we’re reading the book Sheep In A Jeep, of course. We will sequence the story, create a story map to work on story elements, and teach a lesson on personification!

Kindergarten Resources: The Wedding Of Q And U
This week for Backwards Bootcamp, we’re celebrating the wedding of Q and U! In our class, we keep this simple, and we call it a friendship ceremony! We decode and spell qu words, we write qu words, we have a simple ceremony, and we eat cake! Of course, we eat cake!

Kindergarten Resources: Addition
We have officially completed our required math curriculum, so the rest of the year we’re gonna have all the math fun. I love this time because I can let my teacher’s creativity go wild! And that’s what we’re doing this week! I have some fun addition games and activities planned. There aren’t pictures or videos of most of them because they’re all new, so stay tuned for all the updates!
Here are the ideas for the week:
- Roll and add-write large numbers to 0-5 on bulletin board paper. Roll a dice or use a wind-up today. Whatever numbers the toy lands on will be used to write and solve equations.
- Adding sheep- this is a spin on our subtracting chickens game. I will write addition equations on white balloons. Students will grab a balloon, write, and solve the equation.
- Adding Brownies- my plan is to make giant brownies from foam board and brown poster board. I will add sprinkles. I will use Velcro to putthe two pieces of the brownies together. We will write the equation by counting the sprinkles.
- Math Stackers-we will use our MathStackers to make addition equations.

Kindergarten Resources: Mermaid Day
Last year I had an idea to do a fun theme day for mermaids. Everything we did that day was mermaid-themed. It was so much fun, we’re doing it again this year. And this year we’re tying to Backwards Bootcamp and doing it on O day. O for ocean. Who lives in the ocean? Mermaids and mermen!
We start by reading the book How To Catch A Mermaid and work on story elements using a story map.

We do mermaid phonics. For this, I drew a mermaid on poster board. Write letters on a posterboard. We segment sounds, spell words, decode word,s and write words! Simple. Fun. Effective.

Mermaid math is basically the same. I drew a merman and a clam. We practiced addition and subtraction with pearls!

We make a mermaid art project using paper plates and stickers to make a mermaid tale!

And finally, we enjoy a mermaid milkshake!

Kindergarten Resources: Backwards Bootcamp
This week our Backwards Bootcamp letters are: r, q, p, o, and N. R is for red and rainbows, q is the wedding of Q and U, P is pink and pizza, o is orange and ocean, and n is new name day!
Each day, we do a word web for the letter, an activity or snack, or dress up for the letter. This year, we’re bringing back our ABC BOOTCAMP hats and making a hat each day!

Kindergarten Lessons: Morning Meeting
Our morning meeting greeting is a mermaid greeting. When we see our picture on the smartboard, we greet each other.
