Week 33 of kindergarten is week two of our altered schedules for state testing. It’s also a less crazy week outside of school, so we have packed the week with kindergarten lesson ideas for AR words, money, Earth Day, and more!

Kindergarten Lesson Ideas: Phonics And Phonemic Awareness

This week, we’re on week two of Vowel Teams Bootcamp. Yes. I am doing vowel teams or vowel pairs with my kids. Why? Well, we’re ready. I don’t do this every year, but this is one of the years when my kids were ready, so we’re giving them access to even more of the code!
We actually started last week with OO words and they surprised me with how easily they mastered the skill. WE have one more oo words activity to complete this week and it’s the always popular Fruit Loop words activity. Wanna know it’s so popular? We get to eat Fruit Loops! Students say a word, segment the sounds, spell the word using markers and glue on Fruit Loops to make the oo pattern!

Then we move on to AR words! My kids should do well with this because we’ve been using this sound all year thanks to Secret Stories. My kids call it the pirate sound and act like a pirate when they make the sound!
We will do a circle chart to segment, spell and blend the sounds to read the words.

Then we do SHARK WORDS! The words are written on shark teeth. We decode the words and glue the words into the shark’s mouth!

We will also go on a shark hunt. I found shark Easter eggs at Walmart a few years ago so here’s what I’m thinking…hiding the sharks around the room. Inside the shark will be a picture of an -ar word. They say the picture, segment the sounds, spell the word and read the word. Stay tuned to see how it actually turns out..

Kindergarten Lesson Ideas: Dinosaurs
This week we’re continuing our Dinosaur Research Project! We’re learning about t-rex, pterodactyls, stegosaurus, and apatosaurs. On Friday, we will complete our schema map and review our schema to address any misconceptions.

Kindergarten Lesson Ideas: Earth DAy
This week we’re going to learn about Earth Day and how to care for our Earth!

We’re going to write about how we can care for the earth, do a recycling sort, make Earth Day hats and go on a nature hike!

Kindergarten Lesson Ideas: Money
This week, we’re learning about money—counting money, saving money, and spending money (Mr. Greg spends all his money on clothes). We’re really focused on coin names and values, but we do work on counting coins, too!

We start with the classic book Alexander Who Used To Be Rich Last Sunday and talk about why we need money. Then we do a money tree to work on coin name and value. We do some coin sorting and make a money person. We also play a money game where students have large coin manipulatives and they hold up the correct coin when I say the name or value.

Each day we also do an anchor chart for coins.

Kindergarten Ideas: Backwards Bootcamp Alphabet Countdown
This week our Backwards Bootcamp letters are: w, v, u, t, and s. W for wacky day, v for violet, u for unicorns (wear pink or purple), t for favorite t-shirt, and s for sunglasses!
Each day, we do a word web for the letter, an activity or snack, or dress up for the letter. This year, we’re bringing back our ABC BOOTCAMP hats and making a hat each day!

Kindergarten Lessons: Morning Meeting
Our morning meeting greeting is a dinosaur greeting. When we see our picture on the smartboard, we roar at each other!
